Ives & Amort - split (2010)

IVES / AMORT split

Year: 2010
Genre: Blackened Crust (Ives), Funeral Doom (Amort)
Country: USA
Label: Boue Records

Track List:

Ives

  1. Intro (Consume)
  2. A Tangle of Hair and Bone
  3. Feral
  4. Sweet Field of Ecstacy
  5. Regression
  6. Outro (Death within Primal Grain)

Amort

  1. In Bed With Decay

bandcamp

I received an email from Boue Records informing me about this release about half an year ago, but then I had to many demos waiting for a review, so I decided to post this one a little later. Ives' side of this split is actually a re-release of their debut, "Burial of the Modernized Soulless", but with much better quality of production. As for Amort, they're a band from Seattle playing very slow funeral doom (nothing similar to Ives). Personally I think "In Bed With Decay" can hardly be called metal, but fans of dark ambient/drone will probably like it. The whole split is available for streaming @ bandcamp, and according to Boue Records, it's also free to distribute ("we don't have copyright shit").

P.S. Looks like Ives have released a single called "Ugliness and Its Proud Bearer" in late 2011, but I couldn't find it anywhere (and I wasn't that impressed by what I found on youtube). Anyway, if you have listened to it, feel free to share your impressions.

World To Be Ashes - "Fraud" (2012)

WORLD TO BE ASHES "Fraud"

Year: 2012
Genre: Blackened Crust
Country: Indonesia

DOWNLOAD

World To Be Ashes are a 3-piece blackened crust/sludge band from Bandung, Indonesia, formed by members of Jenath (black metal) and Madnessyouth (hardcore). Their music is influenced by crust, black metal, doom, sludge, post-metal, hardcore, post-rock and drone. Related projects also include Winternight, Hatelord, and I.Owe.You. "Fraud" is their first single, released only a few days ago, and it will be the first blackened crust/RABM release from Indonesia posted here.

It's curious to see how Indonesia becomes the biggest producer of metal and punk in Asia, leaving behind even Japan (and I'm talking not only about the death metal scene). As for this single - the music is quite good (especially for a first demo), but the vocals are a big problem. "Fraud" could be an excellent demo, if not for the vocals. Iowa Ababil (vocalist/guitarist of WTBA and sole member of Winternight) is definitely a very good composer of music, but I'd recommend him to find a better vocalist for WTBA.

Amiensus - "The Last" EP (2010)

AMIENSUS "The Last EP"

Year: 2010
Genre: Melodic Black Metal
Country: USA

Track List:
  1. Desecrating the Throne
  2. Kosmetisk Mørke
  3. Prometheus
bandcamp / facebook

Some more atmospheric stuff released in 2010, this time from the United States (Rochester, MI). The band was started in 2010 by old members of Rochester bands The Last & Minos, with the intent of bringing together 6 people who were extremely into the black metal scene but had several different talents. "The Last" EP was recorded in Wisconsin, mixed and mastered by Ken Sorceron (Abigail Williams, Aborted). Don't expect it to be raw and agressive, it's melodic and atmospheric stuff (but not in the "Cascadian" way). Of course, the EP is free for download, and posted here with the permission of the band.

An upcoming 8-track full-length album will be titled "Restoration", and is expected to be released August this year. Here's a preview (the 1st half is entirely acoustic):

Barshasketh - "Defying the Bonds of Cosmic Thralldom" (2010)

BARSHASKETH "Defying the Bonds of Cosmic Thralldom"

Year: 2010
Genre: Melodic Black Metal
Country: Scotland (formerly from New Zealand)

Track List:
  1. Entzauberung
  2. Imprisoned in Flesh
  3. The Whisper of Abyssal Winds

"We are a black metal from New Zealand/Scotland, and we would love it if you could feature us on your awesome blog!". So, why not?.. The music is very good, definitely recommended for everyone who likes atmospheric black metal with acoustic parts.

"Barshasketh is a project firmly rooted in the darkest recesses of the underground. Utterly opposed to religion and politics in all of their corrupt and hypocritical guises, Barshasketh’s message is one of adversarial spirituality and the unrestrained exercise of personal will. Without pretense or posturing, Barshasketh is our honest and uncompromising interpretation of Black Metal music"

  1. Muerte del humano
  2. Transcurso Dia-Noche
  3. Falso
  4. Ida

"Ida" is the second demo by Incipit, an one-man band from San Juan. It's fairly good for a self-produced demo, especially if you consider that it was recorded in a provincial Argentinian town. BTW, the project has a facebook page now.

Depravation - "I:PRAEDICTVM" (2012)

DEPRAVATION ""I:PRAEDICTVM"

Genre: Hardcore/Metal
Country: Germany

Track List:
  1. Wrath
  2. Ruins of Mankind
  3. PRAEDICTVM
bandcamp (remastered 2013 version / old version)

Blackened hardcore from Giessen (Germany) that strongly reminds me of Suicide Nation and Arsen aka König Der Monster. #3 is a quite lengthy ambient track, so we can say that at least half of this demo is dark ambient (personally I'd like to hear more in the vein of first two tracks, which are definitely worth listening). The demotape is limited to 50 copies (25 white / 25 black; each with different covers; handnumbered with human blood). Click here for a more detailed review of the tape.

Forge of Customs - "The Voice of Millions" (2012)

FORGE OF CUSTOMS "The Voice of Millions"

Year: 2012
Genre: Hardcore/Metal
Country: Russia

Track List:
  1. World Conspiracy
  2. The Voice of Millions
  3. Presumption of Guilt
  4. Enduring Will
DOWNLOAD

The newest EP by Forge of Customs, a Moscow-based metallic hardcore band, was released on 24th of June, and has been met with mixed responses so far (some liked it, some not). Personally I didn't like the title track (the experiments with clean female vocals didn't go well), the rest of the EP is OK (apart from the 1st track, which is just an intro). However, if you're new to FoC, I suggest listening to "Zeitgeist" first.

Anyway, FoC remain one of the few political metal bands here whose ideological stance is fairly in the spirit of my blog. Hope to hear an LP from them in the future.

Deafknife - demo (2012)

DEAFKNIFE "demo"

Year: 2012
Genre: Blackgaze
Country: Russia

Track List:
  1. Стая
  2. Короли не правят вечно
  3. К Звездам!
DOWNLOAD

Deafknife are a new post-black metal/shoegaze band from Krasnoyarsk (central Siberia). Don't know what their name means... maybe it's a pun on Deafheaven. Their first demo "Pantheon", recorded in 2010, was entirely based on Cthulhu Mythos - but according to the band, their lyrics always were socially conscious, mostly dealing with such topics as human stupidity, aggression and herd instinct. There isn't any big metal or punk scene in Krasnoyarsk, and the opinion of Deafknife members on post-Soviet metal scene is generally quite low (except for a few bands like Заводь). They don't claim to be a political band, but they're quite friendly to the punk/HC scene, and strongly dislike NSBM.

If you wonder what the track names mean: 1) "The Pack", 2) "Kings Don't Reign Forever", 3) "Ad Astra". I especially like the lyrics for 2nd track - in my opinion, it's much more rebellious than the lyrics of many RABM bands. The general atmosphere of this demo is depressive, but still somewhat encouraging and optimistic about the better future which can be achieved by force of will. This unique mood of their music is better described by the phrase "per aspera ad astra", which is used in the lyrics for track #3.

...Well, Deafknife is definitely not a "true" black metal band (and don't claim to be one), but if you liked Dernier Martyr or Beauty of Sirin, you probably won't be disappointed by this demo.

One more release from B.D.M. - this time it's pure minimalistic dark ambient without any crust or metal. While April-May demos had political and misanthropic lyrics, this album (like B.D.M.'s first two demos) is about the universe and space exploration rather than any humanity-related stuff. Alas, it's not 1960's anymore, but there still are people fascinated with astronomy and everything space-related...

Not all tracks on this album are equally good (I personally didn't like the opening track, and a couple of other tracks similar to it), and it's a little too lenghty release for my taste (almost 70 minutes)... but fans of space ambient probably won't be disappointed.

Dottie Danger - "Большое обречье" (2012)

DOTTIE DANGER "Большое Обречье"

Year: 2012
Genre: Post-Hardcore/Metal, "Punk Noir"
Country: Russia

Track List:
  1. Озеро Великан
  2. Литл Лав
  3. Веролом
  4. Лемурия
  5. Знай
  6. Служили Два Карателя
  7. Вечная Ледяная Власть

It's very hard to determine the style in which Dottie Danger are playing. Their music is often labelled as post-hardcore, but in fact it's an eclectic mix of everything, from rockabilly to black metal. The band themselves prefer to call their music "Punk Noir". Anyway, their sound is quite original, and at least first 4 tracks on this album are really remarkable. The rest 3 tracks are somewhat weaker, but the whole album still can be considered way better than any generic hardcore release. Can't guarantee if you like it, but check it out if you like experimental stuff with wide range of influences (from rockabilly and stoner rock to metal), surrealistic lyrics and advanced musicianship.

Members of Dottie Danger also play(ed) in Distress, Maria: Abort Chosen, What We Feel (who were arguably the most prominent Russian hardcore band, and definitely one of the best), and several other bands.

"DOTTIE DANGER is a heavy rocking band from Saint-Petersburg hardcore punk underground. They prefer to define their genre as “punk noir” - the term perfectly fits the noisy clash of ferocious guitar riffs, gristle-throbbing rhythms, haunting melodies and dark, twisted lyrics.

The band formed in 2005 and after several line-up changes now consists of five personalities strongly devoted to their path of kicking ass, spoiling young minds and surviving on weed and instant noodles. They’ve toured Siberia, Ural, Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Karelia and Central Russia regions, leaving their jobs behind in the name of pagan madness.

Source of Cold - "Silence" (2012)

SOURCE OF COLD "Silence"

Year: 2012
Genre: Instrumental Black Metal
Country: Poland

Track List:
  1. Wake of the Night (intro)
  2. Black Empress
  3. Wither
bandcamp

First off: it isn't even a proper demo, it's just a collection of instrumentals that are made for a demo. Therefore it may be rather boring to listen, but they couldn't find a vocalist so far and finally decided to release these tracks anyway. So don't expect much from it (although it sounds better than many other underground BM bands). According to the founder of SoC:

"About 2007 I've started my black metal project. To be honest, I've more thinked about it than played / composed / practiced and results are rather poor - I managed to release a first, very imperfect and raw demo only in 2012... Although I write and play all music by myself I can't say that Source of Cold is one-man project. There is at least one person that greatly helps me with it.

Lyrics (despite the fact that there is no vocals) are solely nature-related and covers no mankind-related stuff. I do not hate humans (well, I don't hate all humans) but absolutely despise society, especially with its current condition. I also find the idea of country or nation sick and artificial. Therefore I may consider myself as antisocial anarchist / extreme environmentalist (I believe that only cure for a planet is to wipe humanity out but it's utopian belief)...

I'm from Poland, one of the biggest nests of nationalism (sadly, along with Russia and probably Finland, Hungary and Ukraine) so Source of Cold is probably only one polish black metal band associated with ideas of anarchy"

Actually, there was at least one more RABM-related band in Poland (Generation of Destruction), but I'm not sure if they ever recorded anything, as they couldn't find a drummer that shared their views. Same case with Source of Cold, though they need a vocalist, not a drummer. Hope they'll finally find one and become the first proper RABM band from Poland (which is indeed one of the biggest producers of NSBM and other far-right stuff).

Thaw - "Decay" (2010)

The first demo by Thaw, released in MMX (2010). Unlike "Advance", it's not that influenced by BM and sludge, and the sound is much more raw and noisy. I personally like this kind of "industrialesque" sound quite much, but you might not - so I strongly recommend to start listening to Thaw from their second demo, "Advance" (which is undoubtedly among the best releases I heard in the last few months). "Decay" is also quite lengthy for a first demo (nearly a hour long). Both demos are uploaded with the band's permission, but you can buy it from bandcamp, if you wish.

Bellow - s/t EP (2012)

BELLOW "Bellow EP"

Year: 2012

Track List:
  1. Until Dawn

Bellow, formerly known as Toil, are a (slightly blackened) doom metal band from Minneapolis, MN. It's a 6-piece band (3 women, 3 men), with 2 keyboardists, most of which read my blog and come from various radical political perspectives (anarchism and all that implies). This s/t EP is very good (although definitely not for those who prefer fast and agressive stuff). Seems like Minneapolis area is full of interesting metal projects, so I'll research that scene more thoroughly when I'll have some free time.

Nahrayan - "The Beginning of the End · The End of the Beginning" (2012)

NAHRAYAN "The Beginning of the End · The End of the Beginning"

Year: 2012

  2. Barathrum Fields
  3. When Sun Sets Down
  4. Red Moon / Last Sunrise
  5. A Dying Sun
  6. Hollow Grief
  7. The End
bandcamp

Nahrayan were a post-doom/slugde metal/ambient band from Spain that existed from 2000 to 2007. This album is a re-record of some old songs (2000/2007) with addition of two unreleased tracks with a general concept about the destruction of the sun and the end of the human existence. A few months ago Les Fleurs du Mal Records released a manufactured edition in CD, and a vinyl edition (2xLP) will be released through Odio Sonoro, Marchalenta, Radix Records, Nooirax, Devilchild Records, Maniyax Records.

According to the band, "any consult, review, publication of news, etc. will be welcome and eternally grateful". I, too, was happy to discover yet another excellent release among the stuff sent to me for a review. Those who wanted to see more post-metal on my blog probably won't be disappointed with this album too.

They're from Philadelphia, PA, and this EP is the 2nd part of their trilogy (the 3rd part is announced for late 2012-early 2013). Of course it's freely downloadable, and posted here with their permission. Great to know that some of my readers are playing in such good bands...

Sheridan - "Комплекс Детства" (2012)

"We live - in solidarity with those who were born,
We'll die - conforming to those who are already dead..."
(Sheridan)

It's a complete offtopic here, but I feel I should at least mention this EP, because IMO it's one of the best releases of 2012 made in Russia. Maria "Sheridan" is from Nakhodka, Far East, and she was already mentioned in my post regarding conscious hip-hop from ex-USSR. While I didn't quite like her 2009 EP and 2011 LP, I'm currently listening to her newest EP "Childhood Complex" on repeat. It's very depressive, yet melodic and touching; "a hip-hop album for those who don't like hip-hop":

Most of people here remain sceptical of female rappers (especially if they have political/socially conscious lyrics), but Sheridan is commonly praised as the best in this genre. The only other more or less known female political rapper here is Anastasia aka "Meanna" from Nizhny Novgorod, but I personally find most of her stuff quite boring when compared to other activist rap out here (La Vida Cuesta Libertades, Полтора Землекопа, The Crhyme Scene, Moscow Death Brigade, etc.) BTW, Meanna has made a joint track with Sheridan, but it sounds nothing like Sheridan's solo works.

Speaking of "Childhood Complex", I think it can be best described as "existential hip-hop" (though "abstract hip-hop" is a common term for this). In fact, it's merely a declamation of Sheridan's poetry with depressive yet melodic music in background. The lyrics are of very high quality, obviously inspired by Siberian post-punk scene of late 1980's-early 90's. There are also references to the works by Maurice Maeterlinck, Lars von Trier, and old Soviet movies and cartoons. As the name suggests, this EP is mostly about the childhood perception of the world, especially its darker side (this topic is also quite prominent in Siberian suicidal post-punk, which in turn was inspired by Russian literature in general). A good idea was to use some childish samples from movies and cartoons, which are in stark contrast with the gloomy post-apocalyptic mood of Sheridan's lyrics, restoring the memories of old childhood fears of death and "nuclear scare". Unfortunately I don't have the appropriate skills for translating poetry, but this will at least give you an idea of what the lyrics on this EP are like:

"The darkest hour is just before the dawn,
And the militarists have been posthumously proved right:
Pacifism won't led the humanity straight to Eden.
Nevertheless, good to see that heads of states are severed
and buried in unmarked graves overgrown with birch trees.
Behold the "Childhood Complex" panorama: the last structure standing
next to the handful of people finally left alone.
Deadline, you always lived a deadline-driven life,
Seven Mondays in a week, time is money,
We were told back then that there's not enough warheads in existence to destroy the planet..."

You can download the whole EP here, if you wish. It would be probably a good listen even if you don't understand the lyrics. Keep in mind, however, that it's nothing like "hardcore hip-hop" or horrorcore - it's depressive, not agressive. If your time is limited, try to listen to tracks #3, #5 and #7 first, and decide if you like it or not.

Våldsamt Motstånd are a band from Karlstad whose members also play in Babylon Disco, Kill All Humans, IYOV, Suppression, and Destruktiv. This is the latest full-length release from B.D.M. up to date. According to the man behind B.D.M., "this album represents the four horsemen of the Apocalypse". There are 3 ambient tracks that were recorded in 2007, covers of two songs by Shining and Disclose, and a bonus track "in old B.D.M. style". Just like in case with earlier B.D.M. demos, the production is quite raw. Ambient tracks sound noisy, and the whole thing sounds more like early industrial rock/metal, than BM or blackened crust. Though there may be some of you who like such kind of sound.

Don't know why I didn't post this album right after it was released, but better late than never. It's their first full-length release, which definitely wasn't unnoticed on ex-USSR metal scene (actually, it's considered one of the best BM releases of 2011 in Russia and Ukraine, and rightfully so). On this album, Заводь finally moved away from blackened crust (now they state that they never actually played blackened crust, but BM in its various forms, and don't even understand them meaning of the term "blackened crust). Now, like Kora, they prefer not to be labeled as "RABM", "blackened punk" or whatever else - as they want to be judged by their music, not by ideology. "If we belong to any scene, then we belong to the "good music" scene. We hate metal in general, except for a few bands like Peste Noire, and we view punk rock as a hidebound genre. We also dislike most of these Ukrainian black/pagan metal bands - not even because of their ideology, but simply because they're clowns" (Drake, the vocalist)

Not sure if "Ягна" will be released on CD or any other physical media, as the band members don't want to be dependent on any labels. However, their previous EP, "Ritual", was released as a cassette by ROKOT Prods. (Moscow) One of tracks from "Ягна" was also included in a compilation "Punk Aid :: Aceh Calling".
P.S. another review of "Ягна" in English

AFAIK, the band is currently on hold, and they don't want this demo to be labeled as "RABM", "Old Roots New Shoots", or somehow else. However, they did want it to be posted on my blog in highest quality (320kbps). As for the quality of production - it's basically the same on both demos.

All the 10 tracks on this EP are mixed into 1 long one, and in general it sounds like harsh noise with some distorted vocals over it. The EP is obviously inspired by the ideas of crypto-anarchism, and hacker/cyberpunk culture in general.

Poland

Track List:
  1. Wasteland
  2. Greed

"The band was formed in 2010 and immediately became one of the coolest (of the most interesting) black metal projects in Poland. Thaw belongs to the group of artists, who celebrate the creation in some way. In their fascination with cacophony, noise and nihilism, they throw accepted aesthetic norms off, get a listener to experience every sound. In spite of a bit more approachable sound the newest material /Advance 2012/ terrifies at the same degree as the earlier one. The band, not turning away from a steamy, dense and full of anxiety atmosphere, can link previous patents on creating black magma of dirty sounds with recent trends of extreme, dark, black metal stylistic.
The beauty must die ..till the end of the world"

What's quoted above is pretty much all the info I received in the letter from this band. I tried to ask for a little more info, but they haven't answered so far. Well, at least I know they're reading my blog, and this EP is indeed VERY interesting. I'd say it's mostly a mix of black metal, industrial (not noise, though), and sludge (apparently they were inspired by Neurosis). I'll definitely check out their earlier demo, "Decay", when I'll have time (as I have several more releases to review beside this one...) Hope it'll turn out to be as good as "Advance".

After looking at the band name and the track list, I initially thought that it'd turn out to be a gothic/doom metal release, but I was wrong. It's atmospheric black metal - and it sounds quite impressive, I must say. According to one of their members, they're a 3-piece band from Black Hills, SD, formed in 2007. Their exposure has been very limited so far, as they live in the middle of the forest, hundreds of miles from any major cities. However, they definitely deserve to be known more - at least this album sounds just amazing (especially for a DIY recording). Click here for a better and more detailed review.

"Woman is the Earth consists of 3 members, brothers Jon and Andy Martin, and Jarrod Hattervig. The three of us live in the Black Hills of South Dakota and have been playing music together since the summer of 2007. We met through our continuing activity in local music in the Black Hills and developed a strong DIY ethic throughout. Our mutual interests in musical movements such as the recent flux of American Black Metal in the West, ancestral folk music and an appreciation of highly textured, atmospheric music led to the formation of Woman is the Earth. The three of us also share similar ethics in regard to spirituality and nature, creating a solid framework for the content of our music and ethos as a group" (from their official site)

A compilation of recently released demos from a Moscow-based one-man project B.D.M. It's DIY, so the production may be quite raw, but at least the April demo is good. The May demo is somewhat more primitive (and the lyrics, IMO, are more suitable for a street punk demo), but the fans of raw crust/d-beat might like it too. B.D.M. also has released several demos in "cosmic black metal"style. Here's one of them (though I personally didn't like it at all).

Disthory = Discharge + Bathory? Well, now you know what to expect from this demo. Disthory is an one-man project from Chile, formed by Karthagoat (who's also a vocalist in a speed metal/punk band Hatecharged). Våld (Stockholm) - demo (2005)

VALD (SWE) "demo"

Year: 2005
Genre: Blackened Punk
Country: Sweden

Track List:
  1. Min Vän & Bästa Fiende
  2. Våld För Mitt Hat
  3. Jag Vill Inte Se
  4. Nejet Ligger i Jaets Tjänst
DOWNLOAD

2005 demo from the Swedish band Våld, which I mentioned a couple of posts ago. Unfortunately, there's almost no info about them (I could find only their logo, and a couple of concert photos), but they were definitely better than Finnish Våld. They were formed in Stockholm, split up circa 2010 (exact date unknown), and had two vocalists (male & female, with prevalence of female vocals). Their homepage, valdet.tk, appears to be now defunct.
