The Depressick was founded in winter of 2012-2013 by Old Skull and Detestas with the aim to express inner struggles, deep selfhate and melancolic feelings powered by oppressive, hopeless and misable landscapes from the daily life in Mexico City. Carcinoma is their new album were they continue exploring the miserable life in a big city as México where people seem to be so selfish, so unconcerned about others and their environment.

The artwork in this one (as in the last EP) was made by me.

The Well-Wisher - "The colours fade" (2017)

THE WELL-WISHER "The colours fade"

Genre: Depressive Black Metal
Country: Finland

Track List:
  1. Desperation is the beginning

The Well-Wisher is a one man band from Finland. We featured his EP before, because even though this project is not strictly political TR is our reader and has been very supportive with the movement, and with left-wing ideas.
I find this album very nostalgic and with a good sound, so I hope you can give it a chance.
The album is free for streaming and download in bandcamp, and here's a music video for one of the songs:

Misanthropic Forest - "demo" (2017)

Misanthropic Forest - "demo"

Year: 2017
Genre: Depressive Black Metal
Country: Finland

Tracklist:
  1. Nothing but Whores
  2. Purging Fires of Mars
  3. Before Men There Were Others
  4. Victories over a Time There Was

As long nights close in, and winter's teeth are slowly bared by a snarling autumn, you could easily imagine the raw, visceral howls of this Finnish DSBM project carrying through a darkened forest in the blackest reaches of the night. A harsh, uncompromising paragon of underground black metal spirit, the debut release of Misanthropic Forest is challenging and grim. As part of their demo submission, they sent me a statement, as follows: "political issues are irrelevant in our context. Misanthropic Forest is about hatred towards human life and we refuse to be categorized as red, anarchist or any other politically motivated music." They explained their lyrical themes as being "about nature and misanthropy how humans are destroying world and how this planet will be better place without mankind".

 The band originally recorded these tracks in 2014, but errors made in drum tracking led them to decide they could do better and that the songs needed reworking, and they hope to have a new album out, including improved renditions of the songs on this demo, within a year. That being said, their spokesperson made it clear they're in no rush, and want to really do the music justice. This demo was released so that the original recording would be available, to not let the session go to waste. They also declined to make their lyrics public at this time, as part of a conscious effort to allow the final album release to define the songs, as they plan to reveal some of the lyrics then.

Musically, the guitar work is fast, ferociously so in places, but carrying undeniable melody. The drumming is hard and aggressive (although I understand why they thought the recording quality let down the songs a little, even on a lo-fi underground release it needs improvement), and the vocals are desperate, lower and rougher than on some black metal releases, more in the vein of Hate Forest than Wolves in the Throne Room. The opening track of the demo, "Nothing but Whores", is tempered with a sorrowful ambiance, less outright harsh and confrontational than the other songs, surprisingly beautiful even in the midst of misanthropic melancholy. "Purging Fires of Mars" steps up the pace, allowing frenetic and aggressive guitars to the fore to build an atmosphere of violence and hatred.

"Before Men There Were Others" is a harsh continuation of their establishing sound, with fast guitar and blast beats hammering through your ears, which drops off suddenly into the gentler, slower lead-in to "Victories over a Time There Was", which has the feel of "Nothing but Whores" far more than either of the tracks between. For all they are gentler bookends to the middle songs, offering a subtle contrast to the nihilistic ferocity that comes across unbridled elsewhere on the album, they are by no means gentle songs - they carry much of the same depression, rage, and sorrow of the rest of the album, only a little more restrained. Hopefully their full-length will be out before too long, so we can appreciate their music unhampered by technical issues. I'm looking forward to it.

The Depressick - "Sub-Urban II" (2015)

THE DEPRESSICK "Sub-Urban II"

Year: 2015
Genre: Atmospheric, Depressive Black Metal
Country: México

Track List:
  1. Sub Urban...
  2. Nowhere
  3. Inferiority Complex
  4. Misdeeds
bandcamp / facebook

Sorrow, hate, urban life, melancholy... all of this involves the second demo of this Mexican band. (You can also listen and download for free their first demo here).
The band was formed on 2013 in Mexico city, having as an inspiration bands as Lifelover. According to them there are a lot of things that inspires the band, first of all the place they come from and the asphyxiating life in a city like that, also alcohol and the effects it causes on feelings, inner struggles... basically it's all about the personal members experiences living in an oppressive city and how they pass through the concrete jungle.

Right now the band is working on new material that will come out this year.

Cuscuta - "Fodder for the Callous" (2016)

Cuscuta - Fodder for the Callous

Year: 2016
Genre: Black Metal
Country: United States

Track List:
  1. Rented Room
  2. The Last Graveyard
  3. A Screw Fell to the Ground
  4. On My Deathbed
Bandcamp//Facebook

I'll start by saying Cuscuta is one of my favorite active projects. I will follow that by saying this undoubtedly the best thing they have released so far. An absolute Magnum Opus. Every song of this album is powerful and moving. Every note hits home and every word is drenched in meaning. The album is based on poems by Xu Lizhi a Chinese factory worker who committed suicide on September 30th, 2014. The lyrics call attention to a world where profits takes precedence to human life. Business that would rather construct nets around windows to prevent suicide, than create acceptable working conditions. On an album where every song spoke to me, it's hard to peg an absolute favorite. But I would say that "A Screw Fell to the Ground" was my personal favorite. I absolutely loved the production and recording. The clean guitar in particular is ambient and humbling. Each note creating a vast space where you can truly feel the empty void around you. Through this whole album my ONLY complaint is at times the drum machine became obvious. Which was slightly mood altering but never broke the spirit. Go download Fodder for the Callous  and The Wildness Within (another personal favorite).

Gudsforladt - "Gudsforladt EP" (2016)

GUDSFORLADT - "GUDSFORLADT EP"

Year: 2016
Genre: Black Metal, Depressive
Country: United States

Track List:

  1. Trauma Churns Within
  2. They Hate You
  3. Blood From Asphalt

Gudsforladt is a seemingly communist siding black metal project hailing from Salem, Massachusetts and this appears to be the debut release from him.

It's not a particularly long EP but it's tasteful and definitely suited for people who enjoy raw, depressive tinged black metal. Some keyboard ambience and clean guitar interludes further emphasize the depressive element in between tracks.

Hopefully this won't be the only release from this project as I enjoyed the small tidbit and am hoping to hear more in the future.

SIDE NOTE: Please remember that if you're going to send me music, include "RABM blog" in the subject line or message somewhere. I also run a label so I occasionally get submissions and I can easily confuse the two. Also if I don't happen to respond within a few days, feel free to email again. I'm not easily annoyed and I check frequently so I try my best to not miss any messages when they come through.

Carabia - "Apologie d'une fin..." (2015)

CARABIA "Apologie d'une fin..."

Year: 2015
Genre: Black Metal, Blackened Punk
Country: France

Track List:
  1. Apologie d'une fin ...
  2. Fantasme de Destruction
  3. Qu'une question de temps ...
bandcamp

A demo from an one-man project based out of Brest, France. If I understood correctly, the author doubts if it can be called RABM, because the lyrics are about the end of the world rather than changing it, yet he's still an activist who loves and plays black metal.
P.S. My apologies for not reviewing anything in a while, I had some problems during the recent few weeks, including problems with my computer. Hopefully I'll post everything I received during that time until the end of this year.

Metallic crust/hardcore/punk/BM demos - a brief roundup, part 2

While I just can't review all the not-quite-political and/or not-quite-BM stuff that I continue to receive in large amounts, I found some time to give at least a one-line mention to a lot of such releases that were sent to me over the last year. See the 1st part here.
  • Ohmu - a quite good drone/doom/post-rock band from Sweden with at least one member that's an avid reader of my blog... and yes, they're all anarchists!
  • Wrists Grow Cold - a neocrust band from Florida, influenced by Fall Of Efrafa, From Ashes Rise, Tragedy and Martyrdod, with an overall depressing sound;
  • theyeattheirowngod - described as just "anarcho-punk", but their sound turned out to be much heavier than I expected. For the fans of metallic crust and sludge;
  • They Leapt From Burning Windows - lo-fi USBM from Anchorage, Alaska. Their lyrics are said to be about "social downfall and the effects of modern life on the inner beast of man", but I don't have much info beyond that;
  • Sphere Eternal - a 2-piece DIY black metal project by my readers in Salt Lake City, UT. Currently released only one track - which is pretty good for a DIY home-recorded stuff, though;
  • Ritual Misery - hardcore/grind from South Florida, with a lot of sludge influence as well;
  • Fatal Return - raw blackened punk from Glasgow, released only one short demo so far;
  • Dræbsmanden - one-man hardcore/punk/grind/PV/whatever project from southern Norway, filled with "political meta-jokes" (which I and most of my readers probably won't be able to get due to the lack of proficiency in Norwegian language);
  • .leaves - self-described "animal liberation antifascist melancholic hardcore punk" from Jena(Germany). Some BM influence is present on their EP as well;
  • Banana Wakbar - one-man lo-fi grindcore/crust/noise project from France, influenced by  Magrudergrind, Spazz, Dropdead, etc.;
  • EU E OS MEUS ONANISMOS - pretty much the same as above, but from Portugal. Surely you shouldn't expect much from a project called "Me & My Onanism" or something like that, but it's up for you to decide;
  • Animalesco, o Método - another pretty strange death metal/crust project from Portugal whose first demo was sent to me by a member of AoM and a longtime follower of my blog more than year ago. Members of AoM also play in a band called Sem Talento ("No Talent");
  • Travels / Siberian Hell Sounds - another new track from SHS fetured on a with Travels, "Australia's best melodic hardcore band" as described on SHS' bandcamp page;
  • a new demo from Infantile Dissention (again, mostly anarcho-punk/hardcore, not much metal there);
  • Habemus Papam - a new project from my readers in Nantes, France; sounds like standard anarcho-punk/oi to me;
  • Uncle Grasha's Flying Circus - this surrealistic anarcho-noise project is back with a new release;
  • VIDAGUERRILLA - self-described "raunchy/sloppy d-beat punk from southern Spain, land of mental death, with lyrics about detachment, poli-ticks, and perfect for the dancing to the pagan Sun";
  • "Lost Songs" - Zirt's fourth album, which is "in fact a cover album that includes songs from another artists revised under the perspective of Zirt";
  • Alban Arthan - Sonoran black metal/crust, not many tracks or additional info so far;
  • american  (spelled all lowercase) - another obscure blackened crust band that's very worthy of being checked out, brought to me by Sentient Ruin Laboratories;
  • "The Droves"- the last up-to-date EP from Capa, a very good post(-black) metal band which was featured on my blog before;
  • Yazata - a band from New Mexico that was brought to my attention by one of my readers from that area long time ago: "It's black metalish, post-rockish for a sec, and characteristic of our New Mexico desert sound..." Sorry for taking such a long time to check it out, it's indeed very good;
  • Antarcht - a pretty good 2-piece black metal project from Eugene, Oregon. nice to know thay're readers of my blog;
  • Afgud - a new BM/funeral doom project from the Danish undergound. Not much info beyond that, unfortunately.
There are some videos as well. Let's start with a new track from Aggrenation, a Swedish crust band whose full-length release is expected to be out later this year. This track is based on the topic of post-colonial critique of the western world:

Another band from Sweden, their full-length is going to be released this year as well:

A track from my readers in France (no info about the band, unfortunately):

and from the United States (not much further info as well):

Hopefully this post covers almost everything that I didn't get to review during the last year. There probably still are some demo submissions that I've overlooked, but right now I don't feel like searching for them through my inbox. I'll post them in the same format if I find any, and I hope I'll never have to do that much work at a time again...

UPD 15 July 2015: there's some more stuff worth mentioning on here.
  • Tengil - "quasi-symphonic post-hardcore" from Sweden. Pretty good, although the sound is a bit too polished for my taste;
  • Enema Noise - post-hardcore from Brazil, presented to me by Share This Breath Records. The term "post-hardcore" is used here in its original sense - to describe the sound of 90's post-HC bands, not the modern commercial ones;
  • Cult Widow - blackened hardcore from Amsterdam, influenced by the bands like The Secret, Trap Them, Young And In The Way, Nails, etc. Not much further info avaialble, although their music is good;
  • Lambs - blackened hardcore/crust from Italy, influenced by YAITW as well;
  • God Mother - hardcore/metal/grindcore from Sweden;
  • Lay It On The Line - very good hardcore from south London. Holy Terror / Process Church-oriented stuff, ex-members of Hang The Bastard and Phinius Gage;
  • and, finally, Politess - a pretty interesting experimental HC/screamo/grind project from Montreal:

Frostland Tales - "Nostalgie, melancholie, smrt" (2015)

FROSTLAND TALES "Nostalgie, melancholie, smrt"

Year: 2015
Genre: Lo-Fi DSBM
Country: Czech Republic

Track List:
  1. Nostalgie (Nostalgy)
  2. Melancholie (Melancholy)
  3. Smrt (Death)
DOWNLOAD

Here's the final release from Frostland Tales. According to the person who sent me this, the suicide story of FT's only member wasn't a bad joke - he actually did this. Don't know really what else to say... probably should just note it contains 3 tracks of pretty much the same lo-fi "melancholic monotonous black metal" which can be found on his earlier releases which all were featured on here before. R.I.P.
