Aires & Rui P. Andrade & Earthly Beasts - split (2014)

AIRES / RUI P. ANDRADE / EARTHLY BEASTS

Year: 2014
Genre: Dark Ambient / Drone
Country: Portugal

Track List:
  1. Aires : Solvet Cosmos in Favilla
  2. Rui P. Andrade : Turdus Merula
  3. Earthly Beasts : Erebus

The newest release from Aires, made in collaboration with Rui P. Andrade (a member of the noise/BM trio Ecos) and Earthly Beasts (a dark ambient project based in Lisbon), and released by the netlabel Enough Records. Just like the first release, it's very good and completely free for download. Aires himself describes this split as "one track is quiet, almost timid, another one is mechanical, almost industrial, and the other has this ghostly quality to it", yet he thinks that the music should speak for itself, and it's up for you to decide if you enjoy this kind of stuff.

  2. orgânico II - monolítico
  3. isósceles

Finally, another ambient/drone release from my inbox, which probably has no direct relation to the topic of my blog, but it's really good and released under a free license - so why not to post it?

"I've been playing experimental music for a couple of years, most of the times solo, under diferrent aliases, but as Aires I explored drones, samples and field recordings for the first time. On this release I tried to keep things as varied as I could, yet still keeping a distinct mood, somewhere between the mechanical and the animal. Mixed in the drones and noises there is also a distinct black metal influence, most present on the last track, "Contraplacado"..."

Release notes:

"The Aires project is only a couple of months old yet it represents years of experimentation with sources as diverse as digital sounds, samples and field recordings. The self-titled debut album, just released by netlabel Enough Records, shows this sonic evolution in 30 minutes, divided by three tracks and an interlude. Dark, machine-driven yet emotional and ambitious, "Aires" is a firm first step into the world of experimental music"

"Örök is a one man black metal project from Porto, Portugal that creates dense music and atmospheres through repetition, tremollo picking, post-something crescendos, cascadian-like progressions, and harsh distorted vocals"... well, I can't say this album as a whole sounds very "cascadian", but at least I can hear influence of bands like Ash Borer. Both lyrics and song titles have no particular meaning, as main goal for the music was to create a certain atmosphere and state of mind.

The most precise description of that band's sound is "dark cosmic apocalyptic neocrust". Actually, they sound much like other Spanish neocrust bands, so if you like Madame Germen or Ekkaia, you'd like Etacarinae. There isn't any big influence or black metal, but I think I must post it at least because they use samples from Blade Runner! ;) You can discuss this album here.

"Well, I loathe the nationalist (any degree of nationalism makes me sick, it's pure sheep shit) and fascist/nazi tumor that has been taking on the scene through these late years. So I don't give a fuck about the "scene". I won't tell no names, no bandnames I mean. They won't get any more publicity from me. We are an anarcho black metal band, that's one thing that sets us apart from the rest of the metalheads (not "metalminds", I must specify) that join "satan" and "fatherland" and "conceibe" mental thrash alike. FREEDOM is my first law. Satan (=freedom) is above any flag or god, nation or dogma..." - from an interview with Belathauzer of Filii Nigrantium Infernalium.

So FNI can be considered one of the earliest anarchist black metal acts. The band began to exist in 1989 under the name of Bacterion, but their first full-length album was released only in 2005. This isn't pure black metal, it's melodic black/thrash with some traditional heavy metal parts, but anyway it's pretty good. "Fellatrix Discordia Pantokrator" is a high-ranked release on Metal-Archives (99 points out of 100), and I may agree that it's a best thing you can find in the Portuguese underground. Sadly FNI aren't well-known outside Portugal...
