Deliverer - "Smother" (2018)

DELIVERER "Smother"

Year: 2018
Genre: Instrumental Neofolk / "Barbarian Folk"
Country: USA

Track List:
  1. No Home
  2. Until The Plains
  3. Deliverer Awake
  4. Spurn From Within
  5. Fall of Civilization
  6. Reunion
Bandcamp

"... I am Black and mixed race. It’s hard to think of fascism as a benign thing for me, whether or not the attitudes are sincere or just aesthetic based. For those reasons I’ve often been removed from the metal scenes except on the internet, which is where people are the worst about that sort of thing. I’ve probably been to less than 10 black metal shows in 20 years o listening to the music for that reason, so I’ve encountered only minimal amounts of it in person.

... I have always felt a connection to old folk traditions, although I never had a ton of personal connection through them in my upbringing – so many of them I have admired from a distance. But it is also so easy for these things to get wrapped up in nationalism that has also kept me a bit removed from them. There are many Black American folk magic and pagan traditions that I don’t have as much connection to.

I’m especially a fan of Scandinavian and similarly influenced projects like most of what Einar Selvik is connected to, Ulver’s Kveldssanger and the like. But I’ve also looked to bands like Deveykus and Zeal and Ardor who have tried to incorporate Hasidic music and Black spirituals respectively into a metal sound, insisting on making space for themselves and their sounds in the larger umbrella of the scene"

Dead Work - "The White Plague" (2018)

DEAD WORK "The White Plague"

Year: 2018
Genre: Acoustic Folk/Black Metal
Country: USA

Track List:
  1. Welcome
  2. Pestilence
  3. Gods
  4. Expulsion
  5. Fauna
  6. Resistance
  7. Mute

Jon Pizarro - Vox, Guitar, Melodica, Accordion, Glockenspiel

Micah Butler - Vox on tracks 3, 6 and Saw on track 3
Marissa Sendejas - Vox on track 4
Jonmb Cichy - Vox on track 7 and Viola on track 6
Josie Krbs - Spoken word on track 5

"This album has been a passion project of mine since I first started Dead Work back in 2012. In high school my teacher would hand out excerpts from A Peoples History by Howard Zinn to go along with our textbook readings. Viewing history from the viewpoint of the oppressed was both heartbreaking and infuriating, but also eye opening. Of all the injustices covered in that book, the one that struck hardest was the cold and calculated extermination of Indigenous populations. My father being Puerto Rican, I first started reading about the indigenous populations of the Caribbean that he would tell me about as I was growing up. It was astonishing that an entire culture could be blinked out of existence in a matter of 30 years. But the more I read, the more I realized that the Taino weren't alone. From the tip of Nunavut, Canada, down to Chile and Argentina's Tiera del Fuego, all experienced the same. And if not for my high school history teacher, who knows when I would have learned about it. American school painted a picture of a few small instances of injustice, but of an overall understanding between two people that one needed more space, and the other was obliging enough to quietly step out of the way.

I wasn't entirely sure how to even cover such a massive topic musically, and so I put the idea aside for several years and focused on other projects. Every time I sat down to start a new album, or write a new song, I always came back to the same topic, but decided it wasn't the time. Then, a few years ago, I made a move to a new state, and Dead Work effectively broke up, since I was losing my bandmates. In a new location, with no friends, I finally felt like I had a fresh musical canvas to make something that was more aligned with my recent musical tastes. So slowly but surely, I started crafting new songs that felt weighted enough to deal with the topic I wanted to write about. I decided each song would describe a different facet of colonization, that when combined, led to the destruction of thousands of cultures and millions of people between North and South America. There is no way to cover each of their stories and do them justice. Some have flourished in recent decades, some have been lost to time forever. Some can trace their heritage back 500 years or more, some will never know what culture they can claim as their own. I wrestled with each of these song topics, and finally narrowed it down to the 6 most destructive (in my opinion) aspects of the colonization of the Americas and the Caribbean. Disease, Religion, Removal from and Destruction of environment, Resistance and Language. These 6 topics, coupled with the opening track, that tells the creation story of the Taino people, who were the first to come in contact with Christopher Columbus, are what I now present to you as "The White Plague". Each track will have it's own description, so I would like to just finish this up by saying thank you for taking the time to listen. I know this album is filled with technical mistakes. I got in over my head when it came to playing the songs I wrote. But I would appreciate it if you look past the goofs and see the picture I tried to paint. I hope people see that I tried to tackle this subject with reverence for the lives lost, and those who continue to live under the weight of their ancestors. There is no righting so many wrongs, but acknowledgement is the first in a long line of steps to mend such old wounds. Thanks again.

I would also like to extend my warmest thanks and gratitude to Hagiophobic designs for working with me to create the sickest album artwork I've ever had!"

"Loukaniko y lxs perrxs" is a side project from members of Contra//Historia, openly Anarchist, with very beautiful and politic lyrics. In fact, this is one of my favorite projects ever.
Some of the tracks were written to the comrades that are right now hidden and escaping
as a result of state oppression, also it's an album dedicated to all the comrades resisting... we can have better times.

Listen also to their first release here.

kageraw is Julia from Axidance, Warona and several other bands that have appeared on this blog before. I posted one of her solo albums here about an year ago, along with some of her photography and art, and she was very grateful to me after that. Here's her latest release, which is a mini album recorded a couple of months ago. Like all her solo works, it isn't BM or crust, but ritual meditative acoustic music, recorded lo-fi at home.

"Shaman tears.
Short fragments from the songs of inner feeling.
A few grains of the infinite sound which I hear inside,
but cannot show in perfection this real vibration.
13 minutes - that were allowed to be recorded"

Hey everyone, it's Preston again. Haven't had time to update as much myself because of school but I'm excited to post a fantastic release that just came out the other day. Many of you are probably already aware of the instrumental black metal band Deafest and the co-contributing band Uaithne (Formerly known as "In the Sea of Trees") who are also instrumental but non-electric in nature. This release plays each artist's songs back to back, offering both project's equal representation of the natural world. It is fantastic in application, powerful, and really nothing short of what you would expect from these musicians.

Hoping to post some more albums in the meantime while I'm on break. If you got anything, send it my way. "p - system @ hotmail 'dot' com"

Uaithne (ex-ITSOT) - "Approaching Light" (2014)

UAITHNE "Approaching Light"

Year: 2014
Genre: Acoustic Folk
Country: USA

Uaithne, formerly In The Sea Of Trees:

"...It continues where itsot left off as far as instrumental green anarchy inspired folk but with more traditional folk feel. In Celtic mythology, Uaithne is the Dagda's harp which is said to control the seasons and direct the battlefield. My concept for this project is expressing the conflict between nature and civilization. My release, Approaching Light, is comprised of 4 sections each representing a season, starting with autumn. Like itsot, Uaithne is a solo DIY project out of the U.S."

Sparrowhawk - "Harvest" (2013)

SPARROWHAWK "Harvest"

Year: 2013
Genre: Neofolk
Country: USA

Track List:
  1. Siskiyou Malaise
  2. Starlit Fires, Surrender the Equinox
bandcamp

One more Cascadian acoustic folk project, maybe not as good as Disemballerina, but still very decent. Sparrowhawk is a 3-piece project of Rowan, Zacharias and Ursula (members of Nuwisha and Plantrae), started in the autumn of 2013.

Disemballerina - s/t (2010)

DISEMBALLERINA "Disemballerina"

Year: 2010
Genre: Neofolk, Outsider Classical
Country: USA

Track List:
  1. Saturn Return
  2. Thieves' Oil
  3. The Walking Dead
  4. Drown
  5. Hex
DOWNLOAD

"Disemballerina’s core commiserated and lit their first floor candles in 2009 with a friendship sparked between guitarist Ayla Holland and violist/harpist Myles Donovan. Veterans of many louder bands over the years in the D.I.Y. Metal scene on both coasts, the two bonded over a shared love of chamber music, funereal doom and ritualistic ceremony as well as a mutual estrangement in their participating subcultures due to being out, freakish and queer. Originally a 3 piece joined by cellist Melissa Collins, the band has gone through a number of other string players over the years, most recently last collaborating with Lost Lockets violinist Fiona Petra and currently Marit Schmidt of Vradiazei"

Even though it isn't metal at all, I think it should be here, as it's very beautiful music from Cascadia (namely Portland, OR) whose performers apparently share a lot of our views. As mentioned above, Disemballerina started as a 3-piece band, but now they have 4 members in their lineup:
  • Ayla Holland - guitar, bajo quinto, bandola
  • Myles Donovan - viola, harp, mandola
  • Jennifer Christensen (Møllehøj) - cello
  • Marit Schmidt - viola
They describe their style as "outsider classical / acoustic doom-metal / goth chamber music". While it's certainly not metal, they're definitely influenced by atmospheric BM and funeral doom (just like in case with another similar project, Hex Pertners). Anyway, this album is great, and I strongly recommend it for everyone.

Nuwisha - "Solitary Are The Winter Woods" (2013)

NUWISHA "Solitary Are The Winter Woods"

Year: 2013
Genre: Cascadian Neofolk
Country: USA

Track List:
  1. Autumnal Prelude (Skyrim)
  2. Sowing Alder Seeds in the Midnight Tumult
  3. Winter Sun (Elvenhome)
  4. Cimmeria
  5. Amidst Decay, the Rodents Sing Abundance
  6. Winter Interlude (A Song of Ice and Fire)
  7. Ostara/Equinox
  8. Spring Thunderstorm
  9. Midsummer Nightsong on Wy'East
  10. Late Summer Finale (Daggerfall)
DOWNLOAD

"Nuwisha's debut album is a musical journey through the full cycle of the seasons, with a heavy emphasis on the dreary bleakness of Winter"

As you may remember, Nuwisha is a new blackened folk project from Oregon, started in 2012 by one of my readers (Rowan WalkingWolf), and inspred by "profound experiences in and deep ecological connections with the Cascadian landbase and by dreams of the inevitable annihilation of civilization and the aftermath thereof". In comparison with the first demo, this full-length album has more black metal elements. Definitely recommended for those who's interested in eco-anarchist blackened neofolk in the vein of  Into The Rhine or Crooked Mouth (Nuwisha's music is somewhat more "unorthodox", though).

Some news from Argentina

Maybe some of you would be interested in Zann's Music, an independent label started by one of the members of Asilo. Among the other free/independent releases by Argentinian artists, they've released the newest tape "The Green Scar" by Anne Des (formerly just Anne), a Buenos Aires-based anarcho-neofolk one-man project. Unfortunately this tape generally sounds like ordinary folk music (without the adjective "dark-", except for a few tracks like "Moonlight Death"), so it probably won't fit in well here. However, you can get it for free off bandcamp, if you wish.

Fatal Nostalgia - "Woods of Somnolence" (2012)

FATAL NOSTALGIA "Woods of Somnolence"

Year: 2012
Genre: Neofolk, Neoclassical
Country: USA

Track List:
  1. To Wander in Nature
  2. Cleansing Waters
  3. Woods of Somnolence
  4. Forlorn Seclusion
  5. Dark World
bandcamp / facebook

"Woods of Somnolence is a brief EP dealing with themes of nature and emotionalism while focusing on a dark folk style of music. The album art is Narcissus by Conda de Satriano, 1893.

The first album is apolitical, but there is a slight emphasis on nature themes. The Woods of Somnolence EP however, was more inspired by environmental politics/nature in general, even a bit of Paganism. I draw inspiration from green anarchism, primitivism, transcendentalism, and other ecologically inclined politics. Nature is very influential in my life, so I plan for future releases to hopefully have a more obvious theme of nature admiration..."

While this project isn't from Cascadia, the influence of Cascadian BM and neofolk (i.e. projects like Nuwisha) is definitely noticeable on this EP. The author is fan of the Cascadian scene, and extremely supportive of all related ideologies (green anarchism, etc.)

Panopticon - "Kentucky" (2012)

PANOPTICON "Kentucky"

Year: 2012
Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal, Acoustic Folk/Country/Bluegrass
Country: USA

Track List:
  1. Bernheim Forest in Spring
  2. Bodies Under the Falls
  3. Come All Ye Coal Miners
  4. Black Soot and Red Blood
  5. Which Side Are You On?
  6. Killing the Giants as They Sleep
  7. Black Waters
  8. Kentucky
bandcamp
I think Austin Lunn of Panopticon needs no introduction, and here's his latest full-length release, "Kentucky". It has already received a lot of critical acclaim, and a lot of people consider it a masterpiece and a groundbreaking release. It should be noted, however, that a half of the tracks on "Kentucky" aren't metal, but bluegrass (a subgenre of acoustic folk/country originated in Kentucky). I personally am not a fan of country/bluegrass/americana/etc., but the idea of "blackgrass" seems interesting and was already implemented to some extent on the earlier albums by Panopticon. As far as I can understand, the "folk" part of this album is mostly a homage to the coal miners of Kentucky and their musical culture.

Ionnsaich - "va. and vn. learn, teach" (2012)

IONNSAICH "va. and vn. learn, teach"

Year: 2012
Genre: Blackened Neofolk
Country: USA

Track List:
  1. Celestial and Textual Signs
  2. Lady of Lawlor
  3. Will We Heed
  4. Despairing
bandcamp / facebook / blog

Yet another one-man folk project from Cascadia. The music is basically acoustic folk with aggressive vocals, something in the vein of Into the Rhine and Legion of Moon. Release notes:

"The demo is called "va. and vn. learn, teach" and was recorded by Ignat from Wreck and Reference & a limited 25 tapes will be released on Amputape. This release has been my break from the confines of a band.

After listening to lots of Cascadian/American/Anarchist/Acoustic BM, Neo-folk, & acoustic acts I found myself wanting. Plugged in bands will not last when the "revolution" or "Apocalypse" comes. Where will they be when the generator runs out? Many Neo-folk & acoustic acts either put me to sleep or are based in a folk-punk back round both of which do not embody my outlook. I consider this music to truly be one man acoustic metal.

However ionnsaich is more than just my boredom of musical genres. this is a chronicling of my learning experience of the transcendental powers around & inside me. I consider it no coincidence that all of these songs were written after a challenging experience & after the fact learned that they occurred during a large celestial movement. ie: Lunar Eclipse Aligned w/the pleades, A full moon with an eclipse in Gemini, ect..."

Crooked Mouth - s/t (2012)

CROOKED MOUTH "Crooked Mouth"

Year: 2012
Genre: Acoustic Folk
Country: Canada

Track List:
  1. Moontrance
  2. A Crow's Song
  3. Valar Morghulis
  4. The Song of Quark the Raven
  5. Children of the Sun (Hawkwind cover)
bandcamp / buy tape

Crooked Mouth is an acoustic side project of Ian (Harrow, ex-Wraith). Personally I prefer his metal releases, but I'm sure many of my readers are interested in Cascadian folk as well. Release notes:

"Recorded January MMXII in isolation on the shore of Lake Babine.

ALL MONEY MADE BY THIS RELEASE WILL BE DONATED TO FIGHT THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE "NORTHERN GATEWAY" OIL PIPELINE.

I for one will not see this land desecrated by the greed of this society. I will stand against this wanton rape of our Earth until my last breath."

Into The Rhine - demo (2011)

INTO THE RHINE "demo"

Year: 2011
Genre: Blackened Neofolk
Country: USA

Track List:
  1. Gods of War
  2. Blackened Lungs
  3. No Rain, But Thunder
  4. All That Remains
DOWNLOAD

Into The Rhine are a new blackened folk project from the northeast of Vermont, US. According to them, they're all pretty much green anarchists as opposed to red and black ideological spectrum. Their music is mostly acoustic folk, but with harsh "blackened" vocals. I recommend these tracks to all of you who enjoyed Legion Of Moon, but want something with better quality of production.

Track List:
  1. Blue Surge
  2. I Say...
  3. VIII

  2. Bikes & guns
  3. Depressive order of the golden dawn
  4. Sol muerte
  5. Rain forever
  6. Sun

DOWNLOAD

Here are two debut EPs by an one-man neofolk project from Argentina. His main sources of inspiration were bands like Current 93 and Death In June, but he was tired by NS/fascist atmosphere surrounding this genre, so he decided to record his own music (his beliefs are close to individualist anarchism and environmentalism, if I understood him correctly):

"In my music and concept i try to go deep inside myself and go beyond words, search for beauty and freedom in the darkness. For me enviromentalism and anti state ideas can be perfectly embodied with this music, that represent nature, beauty, prosperity to diferent cultures and his relationship with their environment"

Of course I can't compare it with Rome or Sieben (BTW, the song "Rite Against The Right" by Sieben should be the theme song for the whole Neofolk Against Racism community), but it's not bad for a demo. There's one track which sounds more like darkwave/industrial than acoustic folk, and I liked it the best.

In The Sea Of Trees - demo (2010)

IN THE SEA OF TREES "demo"

Year: 2010
Genre: Acoustic Folk
Country: USA

Track List:
  1. Decaying Existence
  2. Downcast and Lurid
  3. The Darkening Skies
  4. The Discontention
DOWNLOAD

In The Sea Of Trees is an one-man project from Los Angeles, playing acoustic folk music heavily inspired by (post) folk/black metal and traditional folk (bluegrass, gypsy, celtic, etc.) The name of the project refers to the Aokigahara forest of Mt.Fuji, which has a historic association with demons in Japanese mythology, and is a popular place for suicides. While the music is completely instrumental, its creator holds the same anarcho-environmentalist views which are common in Cascadian BM scene, and he's very open about it.

Aztra - "Acústico en Vivo" (2010)

AZTRA "Acústico en Vivo"

Year: 2010
Genre: Acoustic Folk / Native American Folk Metal
Country: Ecuador
Label: Discos Florencia

Track List:
  1. Amor Bajo El Sol
  2. Un Largo Andar
  3. Lamento
  4. Compañera
  5. Octubre 18 (junto a Paola Villacís)
  6. Alturas
  7. Sin Opción
  8. El Mañana
  9. Carula (bonus)
  10. Manifesto (Victor Jara - bonus)
DOWNLOAD

This live album is the most recent release by Aztra. It consists mostly of acoustic versions of their older songs, but there also are a few new tracks, and a cover version of "Manisfesto" by Victor Jara. Track #5 has female vocals, and its name is a reference to the infamous events of 10 October 1977 on the sugar factory "AZTRA" (hence the name of the band), when the striking workers were massacred by the government forces.

The music is also strongly influenced by indigenous American folklore and mythology. Interesting enough, many of South American leftist rebel groups pay much homage to Native American beliefs too. For example, there was a guerilla movement in Peru called Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru (MRTA), whose name is a reference to a legendary indigenous Peruvian freedom fighter Túpac Amaru II. Revolutionary groups like Partido Comunista de Ecuador - Sol Rojo ("Communist Party of Ecuador – Red Sun") and Sendero Luminoso ("Shining Path") are also known for assuming their ideological leader, Abimael Guzman, to be an incarnation of Red Sun god ("Puka Inti" in Quechua). It's worth noting that PCE-SR and Sendero Luminoso are far more authoritarian than MRTA, and SL have got a very bad name in Peru because of their brutality. There was also a rebel group in Ecuador called "Alfaro Vive, Carajo!", whose name can be translated as "Alfaro Lives, Dammit!", and refers to Eloy Alfaro, a progressive Ecuadorian president murdered by religious fanatics in early 1912. In the popular imagination of Ecuadorians, the name Alfaro is synonymous with rebellion (though Alfaro himself wasn't a socialist, just a radical liberal and a strong opponent of the church). The first action of AVC, when they broke into a museum and stole swords which had been used by Eloy Alfaro, was rather a symbolic magical action than a political one.

Genre: Ambient / Acoustic Folk / Atmospheric Black Metal

  3. Так небо горит, как солнце гаснет

  6. Голос прошедшей эпохи
  7. Аура
  8. Древняя земля
  9. Ночь под открытом небом (часть 1)
DOWNLOAD

Дно/Dno is an one-man project started no so long ago by Max, one of the members of our vkontakte.ru RABM community. As it was said in release notes: "It's my first attempt in creating such kind of music. The quality of recording is lame, instruments are cheap, but I put a lot of soul and efforts in this work, so I hope someone would like it. Thanks to all supporters and like-minded persons!"

There isn't much black metal on this release, it's mostly neofolk and nature-inspired ambient with elements of atmospheric BM. It's nature-inspired music, and it has a heavy influence from Eastern Asian (particularly Tibetan) philosophy. BTW, the black metal parts remind me of Zuriaake and other Chinese atmospheric BM bands.

Our Last Rain - "Different Borders Of Morality" (2010)

OUR LAST RAIN "Different Borders Of Morality"

Year: 2010
Genre: Acoustic/Ambient
Country: Russia

Track List:
  1. Different Borders Of Morality
  2. Death Never Dies
DOWNLOAD

Someone asked me for the 2nd demo by Our Last Rain, and here it is. For me it's not as good as the first one (for example, the 1st track would be better without vocals... if I could call it so), but anyway it's good for any fan of nature-inspired ambient music. I couldn't find much info about the project, but I probably was wrong about the connection to (A)xidanc(E) and CBTS - the guy behind Our Last Rain is most likely from St.Petersburg...disregard that, he's indeed a member of Axidance. And I'm really surprised of how well-known his project is outside Russia.
