While also known as Pornostroika Dadaifi they are a cyberpunk band formed in 1999 in Lesvos island in Greece. The band is politicized and does not aim for money or fame but to destroy the music culture of capitalism.
I know that this band will remain in my mind for a long time.

Ñankupel - "Mapu ul'kun" (2016)

ÑANKUPEL "Mapu ul'kun"

Year: 2016
Genre: Metal-Punk

Track List:
  1. Misionero
  2. Ñankupel
  3. Mapu Ül'kün
  4. Kuifi Nwen
  5. Pelea o Muere
  6. Akuy Weichan
soundcloudfacebook

Ñankupel is a Mapuche band that wants to claim the struggle for the Wallmapu's liberation. (Wallmapu is the name given to the Mapuche territory). Their lyrics are very close to an Anarchist point of view, even though we don't know if they assume themselves in this position, but they talk about the liberation of their territory and they suggest the application of the "direct action" to get back what belongs to their people. We received this and I guess it deserves a space in here.

You can download their music directly in their soundcloud if you are interested.

kageraw - "I Fission" (2015)

KAGERAW "I Fission"

Year: 2015
Genre: Piano Ambient, Neoclassical
Country: Russia

Track List:
  1. intro
  2. fragment first
  3. I fission
  4. lioss
  5. messerti
  6. fragment last
DOWNLOAD

This project is frequently being posted in our VK group and on gnwp.ru, so I became interested in it even if it's very far from metal or punk. If I'm not mistaken, kageraw is an one-woman project by a member  of Axidance, Repression Attack, The Toverheks and at least a guest musician in warona. Given that she was/is in such bands, I expected her music to be great and wasn't disappointed. Ofc it isn't agressive at all, just beautiful piano ambient stuff, mostly instrumental but with some spoken word vocals here and there.

It also should be mentioned that kageraw is much more than just a music project - she's also a prolific artist and a photographer. Her earlier releases came with a big art book, which I can't find anywere right now (all the links are dead) but there are some examples of cover art I could find:

There's much more art and photography (including lots of nature photography) on her facebook and flickr pages. All her art is very beautiful and I'd just post everything on here if I could, but there are too many pics... Check out her bandcamp page too.

Govor - The Millenarianism Pack

A Croatian project which you already are familiar with, and which has a quite elaborate theoretical base behind the music, is back with a new release - which is a pack consisting of a 7 minutes-long track (a "symphonic poem"), a MIDI file, guitar tab, and a score for it, and a PDF essay on the topic of millenarianism (a term uniting all ideas about the end of the world). It's 25 pages long, and I have to admit I've read it only very superficially so far, but I definitely will look more closely into it (and his earlier essay) a bit later. The whole pack is freely available under the terms of Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License.

Граница - "Знамя цвета ночи" (2012)

ГРАНИЦА "Знамя цвета ночи"

Year: 2012
Genre: Folk-Rock
Country: Ukraine

Track List:
  1. Лютая погодка
  10. У полі жито
DOWNLOAD

In the wake of ongoing protests in Ukraine, it's time to remind that the history of protest movements in Ukraine isn't limited to "orange-ism". Since I already have posted a lot of non-metal folk albums, this folk-rock release would fit in too.

"Знамя цвета ночи" is a concept work about the story of Nestor Makhno's army. Some of the lyrics (tracks #1, #2, #7 and #9, for example) are actualy poetry of Makhno and his close associates. Tracks #4, #5, #6, #8, #10 are authentic folk, anarchist, & cossack songs (of course I mean real cossacks with their traditions of independence and self-governance, and not Putin-loving clowns in ridiculous pseudo-historical outfits that call themselves "cossacks" nowadays). The lyrics for track #3 were written by a modern anarchist author, V.Platonenko.

The band members themselves are from Donetsk (Donbass, Easten Ukraine - which isn't that far from Gulay-Pole, historical Makhno's headquarters). The music is very rich and interesting, definitely recommended to those who are interested in more "punk-ish" side of folk rock... and of course to everyone who's interested in the history of one of the greatest attempts of struggle for human liberation, which is Russian civil war in general, and the story of Makhno's Black Army in particular (the second greatest example of such struggle being Spanish civil war, and the third one is currently ongoing in Syrian Kurdistan).

ATT is a non-metal project of the members of  Kil.Disneyland and Mother Disobedience, formed in 2000 in Athens and released several albums so far. Here's their newest full-length album called "Ptosi" ("Downfall"). To be honest, I don't fully understand this kind of music: it's pretty far from both punk and metal, rather no-wave/post-punk with darkwave/industrial elements, with (mostly) spoken word lyrics. However, if you like DIY experimental post-punk sound from the 80's (Swans etc.), you may find this album interesting.

Rintrah - "Messages from the Deep" (2011)

RINTRAH "Messages from the Deep"

Year: 2007-2011
Genre: Experimental
Country: USA

Track List:
  1. Death Rattles
  2. Plum Creek Warning
  3. Into the Depths
  4. Revenge of the Beasts
"The Dark Wizard Rintrah has recorded one message each year since 2001. Sent to human beings from his cave home deep within the earth, the recordings seem to serve as warnings that humanity must cease its abuse and exploitation of the earth and its creatures or risk imminent extinction. The Message retrieval team has come to believe that the Dark Wizard Rintrah is himself a former human being"

Now, are you prepared for some really unusual stuff? Even though Rintrah's music is mostly influenced by black metal, it defies any genre categorization:  it has acoustic guitar, microtonal organ, and electronics/drum machine. Definitely not for everyone's liking, and even a lot of "unorthodox" metal fans may find this EP way too strange, but if you aren't sure whether to download it or not, you can listen to it first on bandcamp. Rintrah is from Maine / New England, and "Messages from the Deep" is a collection of four single-song demos from 2007-2011. Ideologically, Rintrah can be roughly described as anarcho-primitivist.

Haven't posted anything here for a long time due to serious problems with my internet connection. Right now the only option for me is to post via 3g modem, which is pretty slow, so I doubt I'd be able to upload much. Hope my co-editors will help me, though.

And right now I want to post this song, which is dedicated to various Kurdish resistance movements - including the YPG, which currently the last hope for Syria and the only significant armed group in the modern world that's heavily influenced by anarchist ideas (namely Murray Bookchin's anarcho-federalism):

Most people in this video aren't members of YPG, though - mostly HPG and other groups related to the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK). Personally I don't know much about PKK, but the opinion of Kurdish anarchists on them (judging from the interviews I've read) is pretty low. YPG, on the other side, are a completely legit rebel group that has a lot of anarchist qualities, and they're doing very good in the recent few months - for example, they have completely defeated the al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State of Iraq & Levant in the whole region of Ras al-Ayn (northern Syria) with very little losses, and also took over the strategic town of Tel-Kojar (al-Yarubiya) near the border crossing with Iraq. With more than 40000 militants on their side (not only Kurds, but also Arabs, Armenians, Assyrians), YPG is currently one of the most powerful rebel armies in Syria.

Of course Cihan Kilic's song is hardly metal, but unfortunately there's not much Kurdish rock & metal at all - most of their political music is folk and rap. Check out this band from Turkish Kurdistan, though:

That'll be enough for today, I think. Hope I'd be able to post at least some more music in the next few weeks (I have a lot of submissions, but i definitely don't think I'd be able to post all of it on my own...)

As Light Dies - "Ars Subtilior From Within The Cage" (2012)

AS LIGHT DIES "Ars Subtilior From Within The Cage"

Year: 2012
Genre: Progressive/Symphonic Metal
Country: Spain

Track List:
  1. The Very End
  2. The Disinherited
  3. Le Nebuleux Sentier
  4. Die Letze Fuge Vor Der Flucht
  5. Trapped In Flesh
  6. Yearning For Blissful Moments While Standing Upon The Ruins
  7. Sombra Y Silencio
  8. Insignificant Among Insignificance
  9. When Everything Fades Away
bandcamp

I've never heard about this band before one of their members sent a message to me, but it appears like they're a long-standing (founded in 1999) and relatively well-known band. The material on this album is hard to classify, so I'll go with the official description: "The band fuses death metal, dark metal, folk and gothic metal in their music combining growl with clean male and female vocals and adorning it with enchanting violin solos. The result would become a discovery for fans of heavy and beautiful music". + it isn't "post-black metal", despite it was described as such at some blogs. The music is very well played and produced, but it isn't really my favourite genre to be honest. Other projects related to ALD are Garth Arum (atmospheric black metal) and Aegri Somnia (avant-garde/neofolk), both of which I'm going to check out when I'll have more free time.

The mystery of Dyatlov Pass

I already have mentioned this incident in one of my earlier posts, but I think I shall give this story more coverage, because it's a major source of inspiration for many metal and dark ambient projects from the ex-USSR. In the recent few months, I saw a surge of interest in the Dyatlov Group story among the mainstream public as well; there were 9 TV documentaries about it in last 3 months, not to mention numerous books on the subject.

The Dyatlov Pass incident remains to be one of the world's most bizarre unsolved mysteries, on par with the disappearance of the Norfolk regiment, the 1966 Lead Masks case in Brazil, the Voynich manuscript, and the story of Kaspar Hauser. Unfortunately there's not much reliable info about it in English, not least because of the difficulties of translation (as someone said, "to have the case files translated adequately, we should have a native speaker of Russian that's fluent in English and competent in forensic medicine, sitting next to a native speaker of English that's fluent in Russian"). That's all I could find on youtube:

The article in English wikipedia is pretty bad too. I personally would recommend this article, which was approved by the researchers of the Dyatlov Foundation in Ekaterinburg for telling the truth about the case to the English-speaking audience. And of course this page, which has the most complete English translation of the case files and the group diaries up to date, and a very decent collection of photos. And if you aren't in the mood for reading long texts, you can try this multimedia site. There also are some German and Spanish translations, although I have no idea about its accuracy.

Of course, deaths of alpinist and other extreme tourism groups aren't something uncommon, and the exact circumstances of such incidents very often remain unclear. However, the Dyatlov Pass case really stands out for many reasons:
  • It's still unknown what exactly forced 9 very well-trained and experienced men and women to run from the tent into the cold night without proper clothes and footwear;
  • The tent had been ripped open from within;
  • Traces from the camp showed that all group members left the camp of their own accord, on foot. Their retreat seems to be organized, not caused by a sudden bout of panic;
  • There were only 8 pairs of tracks, not 9. It can suggest that someone of them was badly injured at the very time of the accident and couldn't go on his own feet... or that one of 9 was outside the tent and gave the others an alarm;
  • There were no indications of other people nearby apart from the nine travelers on Kholat Syakhl, nor anyone in the surrounding areas;
  • The name "Kholat-Syakhl" means "The Dead Mountain" or "Mountain of the Dead" in Mansi language, which is close to old Hungarian (in modern Hungarian it's something like "Halott Szikla"). The name "Otorten" ("Vot-Tartan") means "don't go there" (in fact, it originally was a name of an another mountain several miles away from the pass). This could indicate that the whole area is a source of some unknown persistent danger;
  • According to some sources, there's a Mansi legend about a group of 9 hunters that died mysteriously at the very same place. Can't confirm it, because I known very little about their religion and mythology;
  • There's some evidence (very dubious, though) that the tent was searched by someone after the incident;
  • All the diaries of the group were found, except for Kolevatov's one. It's known that he kept his notes in secrecy and never had shown it to anyone;
  • Almost all the experienced outdoorsmen rule out a possibility of an internal conflict or any other kind of unsportive behaviour by the members of Dyatlov group;
  • The nature of injuries found on some bodies is very unusual and resembles those of cattle mutilations. It's actually possible that some of them were caused by a fall into the ravine, but the forensic evidence generally rules out the possibility that it was caused by an another human being;
  • Lyudmila Dubinina's missing tongue - probably the strangest part of the story. It's very unlikely that she had bitten it by herself (because of an avalanche damage, for example). Unfortunately, the forensic report contains only a very brief mention of that detail, and no clues as to how exactly the tongue could be removed from the oral cavity;
  •  Forensic radiation tests had shown the clothes of a few victims to be MILDLY radioactive (not "highly", as it was incorrectly stated by the wiki article), caused by a contamination by some unknown beta emitter (its exact nature and origin remained unknown due to the lack of adequate equipment);
  • There were reports of strange aerial phenomena in 2-4 weeks after the incident (later identified as R-7 rockets);
  • There's one "mysterious" photo found on the group's tapes, presumably taken during the night of the incident. However, it could very well be just an accidental shot, not related to the incident at all:
Currently there are 64 various proposed solutions to the mystery, ranging from completely rational to paranormal/mystical ones. Some of of the most popular ones are:
  • E.Buyanov "avalanche" theory, a very elaborate one, though a lot of facts still suggest against it;
  • S.Ivlev's theory, an enhancement of Buyanov's one. According to him, the tourists were forced out of the tent not by an avalanche, but by a sudden heavy snowstorm, and later some of them fell into the ravine. One of the best explanations so far, but some facts still doesn't fit it;
  • A.Rakitin's "controlled delivery" theory: the trip was actually a part of a covert KGB operation which went wrong, and the group was killed by some foreign spies as a result. It's remarkable because it logically explains ALL the facts present in the case, but in general it's hardly believable and looks more like a plot of an action movie than a real world event;
  • Various conspiracy theories involving military/weapon testings. Way too politicized and highly unlikely in general.
I'm not going to convince you that one or another of these versions is "true". Read the links and decide for yourself. And remember that it's a mystery that is far from solved, so don't go around saying "Well I totally know what happened, it's so simple!" after reading some incomplete info on the subject - it isn't simple at all. However, if you need a translation of some material that's not available in English (only short phrases and texts, not whole books) - ask me, and I'll try to help you.

"The nine victims of the event died miserable, scared and desperate. Regardless of our interest in this mystery – spare a thought for their suffering" (c)

P.S. Here's an album by Velehentor, a well-known dark ambient project from the Urals, inspired by the Dyatlov Pass tragedy:

Some news from Argentina

Maybe some of you would be interested in Zann's Music, an independent label started by one of the members of Asilo. Among the other free/independent releases by Argentinian artists, they've released the newest tape "The Green Scar" by Anne Des (formerly just Anne), a Buenos Aires-based anarcho-neofolk one-man project. Unfortunately this tape generally sounds like ordinary folk music (without the adjective "dark-", except for a few tracks like "Moonlight Death"), so it probably won't fit in well here. However, you can get it for free off bandcamp, if you wish.

Arctic Flowers - "Reveries" (2011)

ARCTIC FLOWERS "Reveries"

Year: 2011
Genre: Anarcho-Punk, Post-Punk, Gothic Rock
Country: USA

Track List:
  1. Double-Edged
  2. Fall To Pieces
  3. Vexed
  4. Rising
  5. Cri De Coeur
  6. Blue Heelers
  7. Crusaders + Banshees
  8. Reveries

And now, for a change, an album from a Cascadian band that doesn't play black metal or neofolk, but a very interesting blend of hardcore/crust and post-punk/goth-rock. Arctic Flowers are a female-fronted band from Portland who appear to be not very well-known (at least outside their region), so I thought I should mention them on my blog. As for me, the music is very good, especially vocals; and I think the album cover suits the mood of music quite well. Recommended!

Dottie Danger - "Большое обречье" (2012)

DOTTIE DANGER "Большое Обречье"

Year: 2012
Genre: Post-Hardcore/Metal, "Punk Noir"
Country: Russia

Track List:
  1. Озеро Великан
  2. Литл Лав
  3. Веролом
  4. Лемурия
  5. Знай
  6. Служили Два Карателя
  7. Вечная Ледяная Власть
DOWNLOAD

It's very hard to determine the style in which Dottie Danger are playing. Their music is often labelled as post-hardcore, but in fact it's an eclectic mix of everything, from rockabilly to black metal. The band themselves prefer to call their music "Punk Noir". Anyway, their sound is quite original, and at least first 4 tracks on this album are really remarkable. The rest 3 tracks are somewhat weaker, but the whole album still can be considered way better than any generic hardcore release. Can't guarantee if you like it, but check it out if you like experimental stuff with wide range of influences (from rockabilly and stoner rock to metal), surrealistic lyrics and advanced musicianship.

Members of Dottie Danger also play(ed) in Distress, Maria: Abort Chosen, What We Feel (who were arguably the most prominent Russian hardcore band, and definitely one of the best), and several other bands.

"DOTTIE DANGER is a heavy rocking band from Saint-Petersburg hardcore punk underground. They prefer to define their genre as “punk noir” - the term perfectly fits the noisy clash of ferocious guitar riffs, gristle-throbbing rhythms, haunting melodies and dark, twisted lyrics.

The band formed in 2005 and after several line-up changes now consists of five personalities strongly devoted to their path of kicking ass, spoiling young minds and surviving on weed and instant noodles. They’ve toured Siberia, Ural, Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Karelia and Central Russia regions, leaving their jobs behind in the name of pagan madness.

Since I've posted almost complete discography of Timebomb here, I'm constantly receiving requests to post their last LP, "The Beat Is Here Fellas". Well, it isn't that bad, but it's just totally different from everything they've released before, and completely not in the format of my blog - so until today I was reluctant to post it. However, seems like it wasn't posted elsewhere, so let's make an exception and post it as an exclusive material.

This album was sent to me by a member of a Greek noisecore/noisegrind band Melanocetus Murrayi, who identified himself as Marxist (but not any reformist/revisionist type) and former anarchist. Unfortunately I lost his email address, but as I remember he also provided a lot of good info about Greek metallic crust (Xaotiko Telos, Anasa Staxti and Ximeria Narki), as well as late 90's blackened hardcore (Acme and Systral from Germany, who started the whole Bremen hardcore sound; Acrid from Canada, and a lot of bands that were covered in Brian Catharsis/Crimethinc's zine Inside Front - I never thought that there were so many blackened hardcore bands back then, besides of Teen Cthulhu and Skaven!). Timebomb were also mentioned along these lines, and it's a shame that they didn't continue their unique style developed on "Full Wrath Of The Slave" (not to mention that their former vocalist now is in a fascist band sorry, it was a different hardcore band, also from Italy, but called Timebombs).

Paganism vs. Nazism - Ophidian Forest’s statement

There's a pagan/black metal called Ophidian Forest, which is a result of international collaboration between 3 individuals who come from Netherlands, USA and Croatia respectively. Unfortunately I was unable to find any of their two albums anywhere, but their statement against nazism is pretty interesting:

"Apparently some people have added us as friends, thinking we are a NSBM band, and deleted us when they realized we weren't. Well, too sad about them. To avoid further confusion in the future, this is what Ophidian Forest has to say about such matters:

They can all go screw themselves. I for one have no respect for morons who think there's something cool about fascism. And surely they mean a more "cabaret-style" kind of fascism to decorate their misanthropy, because they have not the slightest idea how uncomfortable they'd feel in a totalitarian regime with secret police lurking everywhere, ready to put you in jail or torture you if your attitude went against the authorities.

Black metal should not be in support of oppression, but should hold up a big finger against the oppressor, or oppressive mentality, of Western Christian society. Stupid nazis whining about a few Jews here or there... well, boohoo, I say. Those who say the proud White Caucasian race is getting weak because of mixing blood and letting "strangers" invade their countries... boohoo again.
People complaining about such things should go and find themselves a woman willing to bear them 10 nice, blonde and blue-eyed Aryan kiddies (let's hope they won't come with any mental deficiencies!) and then see how unmanagable, expensive and backward-minded that is.

One reason why bands like to portray themselves as NSBM is because the Swastika and Nazism have become symbolical for hate in the Western hemisphere.
Being against Nazism doesn't mean I'm against hate, because there's a lot to be hated. Most of all, I hate the fact that there are idiots who worship a time when certain Germans were screwing up Europe with a system that failed to work, and caused a war that irrevocably ruined the position of our continent, making many formerly influential European countries powerless puppet states of the USA (that is a fact). What an archievement! This was all thanks to National Socialism and its unfeasible ideals.

Thus, being anti-Nazi doesn't mean we're all stupid, goody goody tree huggers (probably the false assumption some people make before they delete us) but are against the abuse and hijacking of history. The Christians have already done that and look what it brought us? We don't want to be politically correct, leave that to anxious people afraid to offend anyone and who think no one's able to take things with a pinch of salt sometimes.

Nazism, however, is not to be taken with either a pinch or a ton of salt and I take it as an offense to sanity and intelligence. To understand extreme thoughts is a show of open-mindedness, but understanding them doesn't mean that they are approved of. I understand the idea of wanting to shove everybody you hate and fear into a gas chamber and into the oven. In the end I think that's a waste of energy, gas and thought..."

A new RABM logo :)

Taken from the below-mentioned blog:

Looks cool, though more suitable for a communist black metal movement. I'd like to see more anarchist symbolism.
