Screaming Art Terrorizing Apathetic Nothingness (S.A.T.A.N) are a band from southeastern Poland which exists for more than 9 years by now, but their full discography became available online not so long ago. I'd define their genre as grindcore. Other people call it screamo, powerviolence, black metal, etc., but the band members themselves prefer to call it just "extreme punk". I think thy're pretty suitable for my blog, both musically and lyrically. Here's their debut release, the rest of their discography (short EPs mostly) is available on bandcamp as well.

Among The Rotting Trees - "The Cold, Misty Morning" (2014)

AMONG THE ROTTING TREES "The Cold, Misty Morning"

Year: 2014
Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal
Country: Poland

Track List:
  1. Cold
  2. Mist
  3. Morning
DOWNLOAD

ATRT is a new project of Marek (Garden Of Sadness, Algorithm Ov Void). This debut full-length is called "The Cold, Misty Morning", and contains 3 long tracks of instrumental atmospheric BM. Most of this material was composed and recorded in 2010-2011, work was finished later in 2012-2013 and for some various reasons is released for audience only now. If some label would be interested in release it officially on CD/CD-R (small amount of copies will be sufficient), feel free to contact the author via bandcamp/facebook.

Since all the tracks are instrumental, there are no lyrics (and therefore no political agenda) on this album, but the author is definitely on the far-left side and RABM-friendly. This debut is very good for a self-produced release, and it definitely isn't boring, despite being quite lengthy and purely instrumental.

Ash & Ruin / Iskra - split (2013)

ISKRA / ASH AND RUIN

Year: 2013
Genre: Blackened Crust
Country: Poland / Canada

Track List:
  1. ASH AND RUIN - Popiół i Ruina
  2. ISKRA - Machine Infernale
DOWNLOAD

I didn't know anything about the existence of this 7'' split until very recently, even though Iskra are one of the most important blackened crust bands out there, and I'm trying to follow their news:

"Ash & Ruin is a side project of Suffering Mind members, known also from Hellisheaven, Enth plus one member of Ceaseless Desolation (stench crust from Poland). This time serving blackened crust from the depths of eastern forests. On the other side pure black metal crust straight from Canada..."

Sun Still Rises - s/t (2014)

SUN STILL RISES "Sun Still Rises"

Year: 2014
Genre: Harsh Noise, Power Electronics
Country: Poland

Track List:
  1. The Path From Spark To Flame
  2. The Epilogue Has Yet To Be Written
bandcamp / facebook

Sun Still Rises is a noise project from Poland started by Oskar, who's apparently an avid reader of my blog. I think he'll be happy to see his first release to be featured on here:

"Sun Still Rises is harsh noise/power electronics solo project from Poland. The main inspiration is the activity of the Conspiracy of Cells of Fire. This is the first record. It has been releases by Diy Label "Wolne Tory""

Ceaseless Desolation - "Nicość" (2013)

CEASELESS DESOLATION "Nicość"

Genre: Blackened Crust
Country: Poland

Track List:
  1. Nieustająca Dewastacja / Tyrania Widm
  2. Dwunożna Autodestrukcja
  3. Egzystencjalny Szum
  4. Poroniony Raj
  5. Jutro?
  6. Nicość
  7. Ucieczka
  8. Z Życia Marionetek
  9. Bez Szczęśliwego Zakończenia
  10. Do Zatracenia
bandcamp

Finally, a first full-length album from this Poland-based blackened crustcore band, much better sounding than their debut demo. If I remember all correctly, one of their members was an active RABM supporter from the very beginning (when this blog didn't exist yet), and their ideology is close to anarcho-individualism (Max Stirner's ideas etc.) I think it'd be safe to say they're the best Polish blackened crust so far...

DIABLOP

DIABLOP are a blackened crust band started by Pietaszek, the vocalist of Na Zewnątrz (old school punk band from Lipsko, Poland) and a (former?) member of another Polish punk band, Dzieci Gorszego Boga / Children of A Lesser God. According to myspace, now they're a duo. While they call their music "black punk", I personally feel they were much more influenced by grindcore and old school death/thrash rather than BM. You can download their album "Punks & Hell" here, if you're interested (password: "brak").

Exmisja - "Arche" (2012)

EXMISJA "Arche"

Year: 2012
Genre: Crust, Post-Rock/Hardcore
Country: Poland
Label: Up The Punx Records

Track List:
  1. Te kilka chwil temu
  2. Na zgliszczach świata
  3. Requiem
  4. Poza światem
  5. Pieśń drzew
  6. Religie
  7. Stoimy na krawędzi
  8. Jak pył
  9. Arche
  10. I co dalej?
  11. Cały świat
DOWNLOAD: OGG | FLAC

Exmisja are an anarchist band from Gliwice, Poland, at least one of whose members is a reader of my blog. "Arche" is their third release - a concept album dealing mostly with the usual "black/green" topics. Warning: it doesn't sound like any metal at all, it's rather a mix of crust/hardcore and post-rock. Somewhat strange, but not bad at all. If you're unsure whether to download it or not, check out this video first:

Source of Cold - "Silence" (2012)

SOURCE OF COLD "Silence"

Year: 2012
Genre: Instrumental Black Metal
Country: Poland

Track List:
  1. Wake of the Night (intro)
  2. Black Empress
  3. Wither
bandcamp

First off: it isn't even a proper demo, it's just a collection of instrumentals that are made for a demo. Therefore it may be rather boring to listen, but they couldn't find a vocalist so far and finally decided to release these tracks anyway. So don't expect much from it (although it sounds better than many other underground BM bands). According to the founder of SoC:

"About 2007 I've started my black metal project. To be honest, I've more thinked about it than played / composed / practiced and results are rather poor - I managed to release a first, very imperfect and raw demo only in 2012... Although I write and play all music by myself I can't say that Source of Cold is one-man project. There is at least one person that greatly helps me with it.

Lyrics (despite the fact that there is no vocals) are solely nature-related and covers no mankind-related stuff. I do not hate humans (well, I don't hate all humans) but absolutely despise society, especially with its current condition. I also find the idea of country or nation sick and artificial. Therefore I may consider myself as antisocial anarchist / extreme environmentalist (I believe that only cure for a planet is to wipe humanity out but it's utopian belief)...

I'm from Poland, one of the biggest nests of nationalism (sadly, along with Russia and probably Finland, Hungary and Ukraine) so Source of Cold is probably only one polish black metal band associated with ideas of anarchy"

Actually, there was at least one more RABM-related band in Poland (Generation of Destruction), but I'm not sure if they ever recorded anything, as they couldn't find a drummer that shared their views. Same case with Source of Cold, though they need a vocalist, not a drummer. Hope they'll finally find one and become the first proper RABM band from Poland (which is indeed one of the biggest producers of NSBM and other far-right stuff).

Thaw - "Decay" (2010)

THAW "Decay"

Year: 2010
Genre: Industrial / Sludge / Avant-garde Black Metal
Country: Poland

Track List:

  1. motherboard
  2. for ages
  3. wound
  4. decay
  5. processing
  6. wrathstar
  7. decomposition
  8. shadowplay
  9. from solid to liquid
  10. consumed by it's own soil
  11. usque ad consummationem saeculi

DOWNLOAD

The first demo by Thaw, released in MMX (2010). Unlike "Advance", it's not that influenced by BM and sludge, and the sound is much more raw and noisy. I personally like this kind of "industrialesque" sound quite much, but you might not - so I strongly recommend to start listening to Thaw from their second demo, "Advance" (which is undoubtedly among the best releases I heard in the last few months). "Decay" is also quite lengthy for a first demo (nearly a hour long). Both demos are uploaded with the band's permission, but you can buy it from bandcamp, if you wish.

Thaw - "Advance" (2012)

THAW "Advance"

Year: 2012
Genre: Industrial Black Metal, Sludge
Country:
Poland

Track List:
  1. Wasteland
  2. Greed
  3. Awake
DOWNLOAD

"The band was formed in 2010 and immediately became one of the coolest (of the most interesting) black metal projects in Poland. Thaw belongs to the group of artists, who celebrate the creation in some way. In their fascination with cacophony, noise and nihilism, they throw accepted aesthetic norms off, get a listener to experience every sound. In spite of a bit more approachable sound the newest material /Advance 2012/ terrifies at the same degree as the earlier one. The band, not turning away from a steamy, dense and full of anxiety atmosphere, can link previous patents on creating black magma of dirty sounds with recent trends of extreme, dark, black metal stylistic.
The beauty must die ..till the end of the world"

What's quoted above is pretty much all the info I received in the letter from this band. I tried to ask for a little more info, but they haven't answered so far. Well, at least I know they're reading my blog, and this EP is indeed VERY interesting. I'd say it's mostly a mix of black metal, industrial (not noise, though), and sludge (apparently they were inspired by Neurosis). I'll definitely check out their earlier demo, "Decay", when I'll have time (as I have several more releases to review beside this one...) Hope it'll turn out to be as good as "Advance".

WAY TO NOWHERE "Old World Order"

Year: 2011
Genre: Metallic Crust/Hardcore
Country: Poland

Track List:
  1. Old World Order
  2. Tearing Off Roadsigns
  3. Fate Doesn't Cost
  4. A Blind Leading A Blind
  5. Don't Try To Find Out
  6. Death Comes Tomorrow
  7. Along The Path
  8. Your Slavery Is My Destiny

I hope you all know Filth Of Mankind, an excellent apocalyptic metallic crust band from Gdansk (Poland), which is unfortunately split up by now. As one of my readers told me recently, they were somewhat active until 2011, but "The Final Chapter" (2001) indeed became their final release. Some members of FOM also had a side-project (which at some point shared ALL the members with what became FOM's final line-up) called Way To Nowhere. Here's their unreleased album "Old World Order" that was recorded circa 2008-2010 (if I'm not mistaken). Maybe it's not as impressive as both FOM's albums, but it's definitely worth listening.

BUD2AY "United"

Year: 2012

Country: Poland

Track List:
  1. Czas Rebelii
  2. Shut Up
  3. Do Not Cross
  4. Wake Up
  5. Wariat

A little off topic here - political rapcore from Rawicz, Poland, made by readers of my blog. While their style is based on hip-hop, they draw influence from various genres, including industrial rock. Archive includes all booklet scans with the lyrics (some more lyrics from their earlier releases can be found here).

BTW, recently I was thinking about making another compilation of socially conscious hip-hop from ex-USSR, like this one - as there's a lot of new projects of such kind, but also a massive wave of "nazi rap" (which started to appear not only in ex-USSR, but also in Germany and Greece) which needs to be countered. However, I'm not sure if my readers would interested in this; second, gnwp.ru (a main source of such music) is currently down, so I have to postpone this project.

I've already introduced Stagnation Is Death to you, and IKnow is one of the best crust/anarcho-punk bands from ex-USSR. It's well-known that Belarus was the first among ex-USSR countries to develop a significant crust scene, and IKnow are a supergroup consisting of members of such bands as Scum Out, Antiglobalizator, and Jiheart. Good female vocals there, BTW.

Stagnation Is Death - "Cywilizacja Upadku" (2006)

Stagnation Is Death are a 5-piece band from Poznan (Poland), who are playing death metal/crust (not without some black metal overtones!) and are into anarchist/antifascist/pro-environmental struggle. 2 of 5 band members also are straight edge. "Cywilizacja Upadku" is good stuff, I recommend to check it out.

Filth Of Mankind - "The Final Chapter" (2001)

FILTH OF MANKIND "The Final Chapter"

The 2nd release by Filth Of Mankind truly became a final chapter in their discography. The band is defunct now, but there's a project called Morne by some former members of FOM, and they're no worse than FOM.

This album is awesome, even better than "Czas Końca Wieku". What else can I say? Amebix and Axegrinder definitely should be proud to have such followers, and both albums by FOM are highly recommended to everyone who like dark, heavy, apocalyptic and politically charged music.

Filth Of Mankind were a metallic crust band from Poland, who released two albums ~10 years ago. Both of their releases are just amazing, and highly recommended everyone who're into crust or metal. While it's not specifically "blackened crust" (at least I think so - though the atmospheric black metal influence is definitely present), it's still one of the best examples of heavy, dark and gloomy metallic crust, obviously influences by 80's UK crust/stenchcore bands. Now let the members of FOM speak for themselves:

"Filth Of Mankind was formed in early 1996 by: Maciek - vocals, Milosz - guitar, vocals, Pawel - guitar, Lazej - bass and Balon - drums. Some of us played also in a few other bands at that time: Money Drug, Stench Of Death, Noise Grass, Protest And Survive, etc. Forming F.O.M. we wanted to focus on the heavier and darker sound to illustrate the lyrics about subject as old and cliché as still urgent and annoying - such as politicians’ swindles, brutality of their thugs in uniforms, the madness of neverending consumption, poverty of the living as a cog in the capitalist machine or sick moral standards force fed since our birth and leading to lack of tolerance, respect or understanding any forms of diversity. Another important part of our lyrical content are visions of the apocalypse, towards which in our opinion, the humankind unavoidably goes. For such a verbal/musical approach we decided the best fitting name was the title of the Misery song - Filth Of Mankind (one of the other options was The Darkest Hour off the Amebix song - luckily we didn’t choose that, as there’s other band named D.H in the U.S.)"

Antichrist & Intensity - split 7'' (2003)

ANTICHRIST & INTENSITY "split 7''"

Year: 2003
Genre: Blackened Crust
Country: Poland / Sweden

Track List:

Antichrist
  1. Pytania
  2. Granice wolnosci
  3. Piach w maszynie
Intensity
  1. Cut and paste
  2. Ingen manniska ar illegal
  3. A life cut short
  4. Burn it down
DOWNLOAD

Unlike two releases I've posted previously, this split album has very much to do with black metal. Actually, it's very close to Antichrist's 2002 album in terms of sound. Too sad it's their last release... And speaking of Intensity - it's just your typical swedish crust band, enough said.

The archive includes some scans of the booklet, with lyrics printed in Polish and English. Unfortunately the scans are of very low resolution... From what I could read, Antichrist's lyrics seem to be anti-religious (well, no wonder) and anarchistic.

Antichrist & Dysmorfofobia - "Common Rules" (2001)

ANTICHRIST & DYSMORPHOPHOBIA "Common Rules" (split)

Dysmorfofobia
  1. Common Rules

Just as on "The Blind" LP, there's not much black metal, it's just crust (but it's good crust!) As for Dysmorfofobia, they're playing rather strange music of sludge/industrial kind (slightly simular to Godflesh). Sorry for too low quality of the cover picture, I don't know where to get better one.

Antichrist - "The Blind" + s/t 7'' (1998)

If you're interested in early releases by Antichrist, then these tracks are for you. Of course it's not black metal, it's punk/crust (no wonder, 'cause it was recorded in 90s, when crust wasn't so "blackened"), but it's very decent crust. It's also a relatively rare and hard-to-find release.

Antichrist - "Damned Those Who Prefered Bitterness Of Earth Than Sweet Delusion Of Heaven, Since They Only Knew How To Relish Of Life" (2002)

ANTICHRIST "Damned Those Who…"

Year: 2002
Genre: Blackened Crust
Country: Poland

Track List:
  1. Seein' black
  2. And game over
  3. Mindfuck
  4. End of investigation
  5. Struggle manifesto

Antichrist were a part of Polish anarcho-punk scene since 1998. They have recorded 1 LP and 4 EPs before they split up in 2002. Now the members of Antichrist are playing in a few other bands, including Silence (very cool depressive atmospheric crust, check it out!)

Unfortunately, Poland always was a stronghold of NSBM, clericalism and ultra-conservatism, so I haven't expected any anti-religious and anarchist crust/black metal band to come from Poland, especially in the very beginning of 2000s. But Antichrist are exactly such kind of band. And damn, their music is GOOD! I can't believe that EP was released as early as in 2002, even before Iskra's self-titled album. I definitely need to get all other releases by them...
