Operation Volkstod - No Gods, No Masters (2018)

Year: 2018
Country: Germany
Genre: Black metal

1. Trummer I
2. No Gods, No Masters
3. Trummer II
4. Utopia

Echoes of norwegian black metal, songs that gives no time to the audiencer to assimilate what it is happening. It is happening that black metal is still in the hands of fascists, machists, sexist and stupid kvlty people. It's time to take a position and fully support noise like Operation Volkstod. Enjoy

Forward To Eden - A Human Artefact

Genre: Death Metal / Hardcore /SxE Metal
Country of origin: Germany
Year: 2018

download

Forward To Eden was started in 2014 as a solo music-project and a vehicle for the message of veganism/animal- and earth liberation. The name is based on an old hardline zine, which basically holds and explains the manifest. I am aware of the controversy around this topic, but deliberately choose the name to provoke and incite. In the first incarnation Rat (Statement, Unborn, etc.) joined them on drums and they recorded a short promo, which although never was properly released (until the first compilation tape/cd in late 2016). In the second incarnation "The Vegan Warrior" (who choose to stay anonymous) joined them on drums and Tom O'Brien (Unborn, Noyade, etc.) on Bass. Under this line-up they released a demo cd, a split 7" w/ Content With Dying (ex-Fourth Crusade) and an EP (all from one recording session in early 2015).
The lyrical main-concern was/is about the fight for liberation and the life in this carnistic society. Besides the protruding diy-work (ethics they always held high) and the obvious 90's influence, a bunch of (partly subtle) anime allusions and movie snippets were/still are distinctive for FTE.
The upcoming debut full-length now is a full solo-work and combines everything they learned during these last 4 years of the bands existence. Even though it being a solo-project they are going to give some exclusive release-shows in different parts of europe (with lots of spoken word) to represent/distribute the record as much as possible. Also it being co-released with Catalyst Records from the US and having a CD version by Mark My Words (UK) as well as Tape versions by Diorama (Indonesia) and HEAL (USA) is a pretty big thing to them which they are very grateful for - and they , still believe that music can make a difference. The LP is entitled "A Human Artefact", which correlates with the cover artwork, a photo by Chris Jordan from his Albatross/Midway series... this is their manifesto (coming with the album) Since humans developed the skills to alter nature, they started to create what the follow-up generations would refer to as "artefacts". A cultural artefact is always something typical and defining for a certain era; something that reflects the spirit of that age. Most of these artefacts occur naturally and unintentionally, they are not primarily made to give information or serve a particular purpose for the posterity; but nevertheless they do. As they understand it, it is a sacred duty to conscientiously deal with the subject of the artefact of our generation and the artefact of humanity as a whole; will it be another object of exorbitant splendour, manufactured by any means, despite any consequences to others with the aim to simply line the pocket of some so-called "elite" individual? Will it be an outstanding piece of craftsmanship; designed to kill in an unprecedented manner, to ensure the survival of a nation or to inflict fear into the hearts of their enemies? When they look at our generation and search for "things that will last" and give an indication about the way of life which surrounds us, they cannot avoid seeing the facts of what the current populace are susceptible to and what those who claim to be in command are responsible for: that every year we discard of around 8,000,000 metric tons of plastic into the oceans - which adds to the 150,000,000 metric tons already impacting upon the survival of marine life, which in turn impacts on the survival of all life on this planet - we are urged to consume and give away our hard earned money to buy obsolete electronic scrap which is already outdated before all the stock has been sold; to make way for new models - so we have to keep purchasing in order to keep up with "progress", landfills are bursting at the seams, as more and more waste is created than designated landfills could possibly contain, leading them to be prone to producing more air pollution and environmental destruction. We have to ask ourselves: What do we want the story which we will tell to future generations to sound like? What do we want to communicate and pass on to the next generation? And, if the days of humanity are already numbered, what do we want the human artefact to be? They do not want to further contribute to a Zeitgeist of war and blight of all that is natural, at the hands of anthropocentric maniacal rulers, who do not speak or act for you or I. They want to instigate a culture of alteration, opting to deliberately become ostracised from the current repulsive miscarriage of justice of the natural law, which surrounds every fibre of our being, from every available angle. To restore the human nature, free from indoctrinated lies and egocentric, self-destructive mindsets, we have to accept our atrocities, change our direction and proceed forward to eden.

Year: 2017
Genre: Black Metal
Country: Germany

Track List:
  1. I
  2. II
  3. III
  4. IV
Bandcamp / Facebook

"From the most remote crevices of the German extreme metal underworld come Abkehr, a new black metal entity from Northern Germany who’s genesis appears to have been sparked by unprecedented emotional and mental collapse and by an unfathomable pull toward absolute, devouring darkness. Abkehr were formed in 2015 in Northern Germany by sole masterminds Raash and H. with the intent of unifying under the black looming star of self-disintegration the raw misanthropic grimness of the most praised Norwegian black metal tradition with the atmosphere and desperation of depressive black metal, and the swarming majesty of US atmospheric black metal."

Through Chaos & Solitude - "The Thawing Winds Of The Morning Sun" (2017)

THROUGH CHAOS & SOLITUDE "The Thawing Winds Of The Morning Sun"

Year: 2017
Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal
Country: Germany
Tracklist:

  1. The Intransigence Of The Soul
  2. A Heart Of Eternal Winter (And The Longing For Your Warmth)
  3. If This Is The Best We Can Get Then I Am Disappointed

As I'm writing this, autumn is beginning to set in. It's been raining all day, and the dark pines lining the valley where I live are stark against the close grey sky, wreathed in mist. It's the perfect backdrop for the gradual unfolding of this brilliant demo from Through Chaos & Solitude. From the project's solo member, Tim Rule - "The thawing winds of the morning sun is us. Mankind. We are our own blessing and our own curse. We are the stroke of wing which causes these winds to blow. We try to become god ourselves while declaring him for dead and still we deny our nature. We subdue the earth and it's children and still we strive for more. By now we already realized our purpose and we willingly choose to neglect it. We're flying directly into the sun and still we're accelerating..."

The album opens with sampled winter winds and gentle guitar work, a soft lead in to one of the best albums I've heard all year. The guitar advances into a faster, tremolo-picked melody, and then the vocals hit. The pace and sound of the first two minutes, and the mournful atmosphere they evoke, are to me the perfect example of the real beauty of black metal - sweeping, cold, building a vision of nature in all her bleak glory.

When I was very young, my grandfather built me a tiny cabin at the back of his heavily forested block of land. Recently I've not had many occasions to visit it, but the last time I made the trek it was a fight through trees violently overgrowing the path, brambles snarling out through the light rain, until I reached the cabin. It was nestled back into a forest that seemed more imposing than it had when I was younger, and the blank windows conveyed a strange sense of nostalgia, loss, and somehow the end of innocence. The lyrics of that first track, "The Intransigence Of The Soul", read as a conflict born out of the same feeling - seeing your innocence disappear as you grow and learn, and suddenly the world is more complex than you can understand, everything makes you afraid and confused, and your mind has snarled itself beyond hope of escape in seemingly impossible contradictions. "Intransigence" deals in this way with a sense of existential dread, both a fear of and longing for death, a struggle building intensity through the song, and ending with a desperate series of unanswered questions, screamed out at the universe, the gods, nature, whoever, in fact, might be listening to souls lost in the winter.

The next track, "A Heart Of Eternal Winter (And The Longing For Your Warmth)", opens peacefully, again, with gentle guitars, before my only minor sticking point with the album appears, in the form of the sung vocals. While the screaming is harsh, imposing, but somehow ethereal, and the spoken passages perfectly underscore lyrical points of importance, for me the clean singing was slightly too muddy to really add to the music. That being said, I'm a bit puritanical when it comes to clean singing in black metal. Strong lyrics, revolving around Norse mythology, delivered through a layered mix of harsh vocals to excellent effect, weave through the guitars and double kick hammering, to build a wonderfully cold and sorrowful picture of a banished god, stalking the forests of Midgard as the three winters close in.

The final song on the album is where the really heavy central themes of the "The Thawing Winds Of The Morning Sun" come into play. The guitar eases off, taking on a softer, more ambient feeling, and allowing the lyrics to really come across early in the song, before building back up to an intense finale. "If This Is The Best We Can Get Then I Am Disappointed" considers, as the title suggests, the miserable state of human affairs, the contradictory nature of our philosophies, our ideals, even our existence, in a piece of music that really conveys the tormented and conflicted existence we are privy to. The short section of spoken vocals which close the track, and the album, to me perfectly express the feeling of the whole artwork;

"I am disappointed in us, I am disappointed in me
If we’re not here for a reason, what is the existence that shall be?
Is this really the best that we can be?
Then please have mercy and let it end with me"

I look forward to seeing what's next from this excellent black metal project.

  2. Norwegian Nights (Waldgeflüster)
  3. Håkan's Song (Panopticon)
  4. Trauerweide II (Panopticon)

As you can see, I don't really care much about this blog anymore, and the other contributors aren't very active either. On the other hand, I had some talks with the members of the TDSAU collective, and one of their founding members agreed to run this blog too. As of now he isn't active on here or on TDSAU, but I hope he will be back soon.

In other news: some time ago, one of my readers asked me why wouldn't I get a contributor from Latin America, because a lot of interesting RABM-related stuff comes from that part of the world. Looks like I finally did it, and I have high hopes for her participation as well.

And for those who haven't seen it yet: here's a new CD from Panopticon, and it's great as always. The second band on this split is really good too, but I don't know much about them - except I've seen them on some list of bands with anti-NSBM stance several years ago. If you need a download link for this split, I think you'd easily find it without my help.

Sorgsenhet were formed in 2010 in Giessen, Germany. Their first demo release "Drachennebel" (2013) was apolitical, but two years later they decided to do more political left-friendly and antifascist music. In particular, the intro of this EP is an organ cover of a Yugoslavian partisan song, and the last track, "Ballad of a Soldier", is a cover version of a popular Soviet song of the same name. Additionally, you can hear an excerpt from "Warschawjanka" in the end of  the second track, "Durch die Tiefen der Unendlichkeit". The cover art for "Marsch der Zeit" is a painting by Ivan Aivazovsky called "Rainbow".

Aether - "Altar" (2015)

AETHER "Altar"

Year: 2015
Genre: Ambient/Drone, Black Noise
Country: Germany

bandcamp

Aether is an one-man ambient black metal project by Ravachol from Munich, Germany, which I discovered due to this review by Hayduke X. Here's the latest up-to-date release from Aether, consisting of two long untitled tracks. There's not much metal on this one, it's mostly experimental stuff, but it's definitely BM-influenced and it isn't as noisy as you might think. The release comels along with a short essay about its concept.

First demo from a political DIY band with an anarchist background, based out of Bremen (Germany). The demo, which is going to be re-released as a part of a split EP soon, consists of 3 songs in varied genres, and generally can be characterized as "metallic crust/hardcore".
