Bâtard EPs - Chaos (2011) Hibernation (2013) Pluies (2017)

Genre: D-beat dark madness
Country of origin: Canada
Year: 2011/ 2013/ 2017

Noisy d-beat black metal from Québec.
"Formed in 2009 in Montreal, Canada, Bâtard is a trio that makes a hybrid of black metal, punk and noisy industrial. Inspired by isolation, anger and hatred, Bâtard takes their rock and electronic roots to make an illegitimate sonic mix of guttural screams, cold guitars and noisy synth beats. Chaos & Hibernation (2014), a combination of the first two EPs, was released on CD by Russian independant label Kunsthauch. In 2018, american tape-only Witchcult records released the Pluies EP. Disgusted by the music business and rock'n'roll lifestyle, the three members are entirely dedicated in creating new music; therefore, Bâtard never tour. They are right now recording new tracks, particularly written in a hardcore punk vein. Bâtard embraced the impurity of its sound, celebrating disorder and imperfection."
"Hibernation" is totally pure grimy black metal, "Pluies", my favourite, is more lofi than the others.

*special mention to "Nomade" from "Chaos": unique experience.

Rampancy - "The Sublime Conquest of Nothing" (2017)

RAMPANCY - "The Sublime Conquest of Nothing"

Year: 2017
Genre: Black Metal
Country: Canada
Track List:
  1. Blood for blood
  2. Failure in the eyes of Jehova
  3. Schadenfreunde
  4. Choose your side
  5. Thy Kingdom
  6. Besieged
  7. Solitary march under a black flag
  8. Hanger 96 (Two forces balance)
  9. Dawn of the new order
  10. Insurrectionary extremist
  11. A.F.D.T.D
"The Sublime Conquest Of Nothing" is the fourth album chronologically and the first under the new name Rampancy following up from the 2014 release "Aftermath". Many of these songs are re-envisioned from their past as Anti-Freeze tracks found on other releases and some tracks are entirely new themselves.

Thematically, this album largely deals with topics of violence, hatred, betrayal, and insurrection. The songs expand on previous anarchist topics and declares open hostility towards a collective world enslaved by political machinery and an identity crisis.

Sarin Bath - s/t (2015)

SARIN BATH "Sarin Bath"

Year: 2015
Genre: Blackened Sludge Metal
Country: Canada

Track List:
  1. Burned & Rotting
  2. Release Outside
  3. Slow Disease
  4. Depthless Grave
  5. Ground Bones
bandcamp

Raw, noisy sludge from my readers in Canada: "We play a stripped down noisy, primitive form of black sludge and I think it'd add nicely to blog and its fans. We'll be recording again soon. We don't play live much and when we do we generally cover ourselves in paint and make a mess. Instrumentation is a mix of bass, drums and home made pedals + vocals. Half written / half improvised".
Associated acts: IRN, ANGLES.

Tempest - "Self-Titled" (2015)

TEMPEST "Tempest"

Year: 2015
Genre: Blackened Punk, Hardcore Punk
Country: Canada

Track List:
  1. Intro
  2. A Grand Design
  3. Shroud
  4. Sunless Year
  5. Atonement
  6. Wounding Pattern
  7. Deprivation
  8. The Night Remains
bandcamp / facebook

A self-titled demo out from Vancouver, B.C.'s own Tempest, welcome another hardcore punk/black metal band who considers themselves akin to the sound of Buried Inside, Converge, His Hero is Gone, One Eyed God Prophecy, and Fell Voices. I listened and they definitely play hardcore punk in a black metal fashion. Honestly, they're what I thought Amebix would sound like before I had ever heard them before, which is black metal but faster and harder than Amebix actually plays. Dark ambience music with a fast rhythum that doesn't sink your heart too deeply, but it doesn't intend to, because it follows up the dark ambience with fast and speedy punk riffs! I love it. Recording quality is good, though the vocals sound distant at times, but that may be intentional. With songs like A Grand Design and Shroud, I can say it was a good listen with a refreshing mix. Some people love bad quality demos, and while the demo isn't a terrible recording, it could have been polished up or done better. I am just not of the opinion that much anything with dark ambience, even with hardcore punk influences, doesn't set up for a good album with average recording quality, in my opinion. If you give it a listen and like it, though, the album will be on React with Protest records and An Out Recordings later this year.

Nightmare Collective - Misery and Terror Demo (2014)

NIGHTMARE COLLECTIVE - Misery and Terror Demo

Year: 2014
Genre: Blackened Crust/d-beat
Country: Canada

Track listing:
  1. Refuse to Relax
  2. Recipe for Madness
  3. Indifferent Society
  4. The Only Escape is a Trap
  5. Sick and Distressed
  6. To Return
Roughly about a year old by this point but I think it fits the vibe so far of this site. Nightmare Collective is a two piece of bass-drums-vocals with the latter duties being traded off throughout the demo. If you like the sound of a crusty bass mixed with d-beats and reverb drenched shouts, you might dig this. NC hail from Montreal which hosts a very active left-wing scene as well as a music scene in general.

Hoping to see more from them in the future! A proper release definitely needs to be put out.

Vorbkt - Tragedy

Vorbkt - "Tragedy"

Year: 2014
Genre: Depressive Black Metal
Country: Canada

Track List
  1. Torn Inside
  2. Then I Began Marching Towards An Extinct Race
  3. Lay Deceased Under a Full Moon
  4. Tragedy

In keeping with my Canadian theme, another cool artist from up here goes by the name of Vorbkt. It's a solo project and produced by someone from out in Newfoundland. It's your usual DSBM music but simply just done well. Vorbkt has more recent releases, including a split with Cult of Mourning but this one is by far my favourite. I spoke to them once via reddit and they seem pretty cool.

For fans of raw DSBM, 'Tragedy' is a great release to add to your collection.

Mad Trapper - Kill Us, Start Anew (2013)

Mad Trapper - "Kill us, Start Anew"

Year: 2013
Genre: Metalcore
Country: Canada

Track List
  1. Born of Hatred
  2. Ego Weendigo
  3. Pyres
  4. Innocent
  5. Fools
  6. Burning Moth
  7. Meaning(less)
  8. Magnum Opus
For those who might see the term 'metalcore' and go "eeeeeegghh", I totally understand. There's a huge influx of metalcore still in a lot of scenes that just does the same open note breakdown. I normally wouldn't post something like that here but these guys are exceptional in that they do metalcore "properly". That being extreme metal influenced by hardcore. This falls more on the metal end of the spectrum in that it has some very thrashy riffs combined alongside death metal/grindcore drumming.

I've played with Mad Trapper a bunch and they're really good guys and while they might not be anarchist or explicitly left-wing, they certainly maintain a decent worldview that sets them apart from the usual macho tough dude band.

They also have a new release coming out soon which has a single currently up for download.

Wounds - In The Valley Of Death (2015)

Wounds - "In the Valley of Death"

Year: 2015
Genre: Blackened Death Metal
Country: Canada

Track List:
  1. One Womb
  2. Trailing Hades
  3. Fare the Well
Another band from my area, Wounds is a punishing black metal band with heavy death metal influences. I'm unsure of much of the band's history other than I believe they're new and that the vocalist was the drummer of the band 'Misfortune" whom I had posted on here before. My band Lapsaria also played with them recently alongside Panzerfaust and Vow of Thorns.

I have really dug this release since they put it out earlier this year. Each song is pretty well constructed, with dynamic changes and slick production. Any fan of more atmospheric or mid-tempo'ed black metal will dig this but it will also appeal very much to people across the spectrum.

Wasi'chu - S/T (2015)

Wasi'chu "Wasi'chu"

Year: 2015
Genre: Hardcore punk, Crust
Country: Canada

Track List:
  1. Embers
  2. 1789
  3. Reclaim
  4. Exodium
  5. Liberté, égalité, fraternité
  6. Static
  7. Moths

It's been awhile since I've posted and I apologize. I have been extremely busy with school, recording bands, and trying to get some shit in my life together. I will be posting a bunch of music momentarily so stay tuned.

Wasi-chu is a band from my homecity of Windsor, Ontario where I'm proud to say that it has one of the best music scenes in all of Canada. Wasi-chu is the collaborative effort of a variety of musicians I've played alongside but is mostly fronted and composed by Judah Zakoor and Mattu Findlater of the similar and now defunct project Valerie Page. Also in the band are Sean Fox of a variety of groups (Namely the crust band Uncle Ray) and Matt Menard, a skater dude of ten thousand more bands (My favourite always being Get Bent.) now living in Montreal. I also record music with Mattu under our project with the joke name of Narcthrone. We take ourselves seriously though... I swear...

As with these projects and most of the projects that they get into, they're explicitly left-wing/anarchist/anti-capitalist in nature and feature a chunk of samples from various political media. The music is heavy, tight, and melodically sound.

Track List:
  1. Lawless
  2. Ruins
  3. Predator Drone MQ-1
  4. Traume
  5. Nihil
  6. Illegal
  7. Aegis of the Victor
  8. Der Einzige
  9. Lebensraum
  10. Battle of the Hundred Slain
bandcamp

While I continue to receive a lot of demos, I don't feel like I want to post any of them right now, sorry. On the other hand, an announce of the next full-length from Iskra is great news and definitely should be mentioned on here. The exact date of release is still TBA, but there already are two songs available for streaming of bandcamp ("Ruins" & "Predator Drone MQ-1"), and they're awesome. Hopefully the rest of the album is going to be just as good...

UPD 17 July 2015: the whole album is now avaiable for download, and I got to say it's awesome!

Efferat - "okuukun tl amon rosesn bsrer" (2015)

Efferat - Okuukun tl Amon Rosesn Bsrer

Year: 2015
Genre: Post-Metal, Atmospheric Black Metal
Country: USA/Canada

Track Listing
  1. Theravada
  2. Tagati
  3. Devadatta
  4. Grimlor
  5. Rage of Leoshitus
DOWNLOAD

Had this come in recently and it's quite the release. So far you get this really interesting blend of raw atmospheric black metal with these jazzy sections that often fade into some sort of ambient interlude. For a three piece, they really fill the space and I could only imagine that this is some wicked shit to see live.

I'm not really sure of the band's history but they appear to be a project between people from Philadelphia and Toronto. Maybe I'll run into them someday being from near Toronto myself...

Narcthrone - "NO PASARÁN" (2014)

NARCTHRONE "No Pasaran"

Year: 2014
Genre: Blackened Crust/Sludge
Country: Canada

Track List:
  1. Wasteland Rat
  2. Pillage the Fortress
DOWNLOAD

Narcthrone is a project made for fun by Preston (Anti-Freeze) and another guy who's a part of the Windsor-based hardcore/grind band Corrupt Leaders and the now defunct blackened crust band Valerie Page. Of course Preston could post it by himself, but he left it to me, because he doesn't like the idea of self-promotion. Enjoy!

MISFORTUNE - "Feathered Duke and Tar Fowler"

Year: 2011
Genre: Black Metal, Grindcore
Country: Canada

Track List:
  1. Hatred
  2. Bloodlaws
  3. Scalps on a Mantle

Hello readers, I would like to begin this post by introducing myself, Preston Ell, as one of the new contributors to the RABM blog. I'm extremely excited to be a part of this because it is bar none my favourite blog out there and the political edge only sweetens it for me. I know that some of the writers here have been very busy and unable to make frequent posts so I only hope that I can take some weight off of their shoulders.

A little bit of info about me: I come from Canada (London, Ontario to be exact..) and I am also an active artist involved with lots of projects, basement shows, and my own little DIY label called Why Gang Records. My solo music was posted here a bit ago for those who may have seen it and I am currently in the production of another album under the same name that's proving to be some of my best work yet.

If you have any music you want to show me, feel free to shoot me an email: [p - system @ hotmail 'dot' com]

Anyways, without going into too much about myself, I would like to begin my first post by introducing one of my favourite local bands that is now sadly defunct. Misfortune was a really solid black metal band with fantastic musicians and their live performances were extremely intense/loud. They've since gone in various different directions and I know that their vocalist Anthony is currently living in Vancouver. You can check out his new project OAF here.

This release isn't too long but it's a great representation of what the band was. There are more tracks in the hopper ready to be released but they are lacking vocals at the moment. I'm hoping that they can get those out someday and maybe even play a reunion show of some sorts. Fans of grindy black metal will really enjoy this so give it a listen when you can.

Infantile Dissention - demo (2014)

INFANTILE DISSENTION "demo"

Year: 2014
Genre: Blackened Punk/Hardcore
Country: Canada

Track List:
  1. Hidden Ploy
  2. Greasy Sludge Vampires
  3. Ignoble Dutch Hell
  4. Always in the Peripheral
  5. Demonized
  6. It's Only Natural
  7. Static Life
  8. Radio Schizo (Rudimentary Peni)
DOWNLOAD

Line-up:

Harry - Drums
Jon - Bass
Callum - Guitar / Vocals
Damian 'The Power' Grind - Cover Art

Infantile Dissention are a self-described "punk, anarchist, and anti-colonial" band from Victoria, BC, Canada. They claim to be influenced by both punk and metal, but, honestly, this demo is much closer to punk and hardcore/powerviolence than to metal. It consists of 7 short and fast tracks, recommended to those who wants something like Iskra, but less heavy.

Hunter Gatherer - "Hunter Gatherer" (2014)

HUNTER GATHERER "Hunter Gatherer"

Year:  2014
Genre:  Doom Metal
Country:  Canada

Track List:
  1. The Jack Pine
  2. Hunter-Gatherer
  3. Subtle Bodies
  4. Boreal
  5. Sturgeon Lake
Hunter Gatherer, originally a one man project, now with two members, continues their exploration of the natural world.  I think there is a lot of growth here musically, including some very good moments throughout.  This is less black metal and more doom metal.

Crepehanger - "Demo" (2014)

CREPEHANGER "Demo"

Year:  2014
Genre:  Blackened crust
Country:  Canada

Track List:
  1. Knocking Out National Front Teeth
  2. Narcissuss
  3. Castrophrenia
  4. Bring Back the Piledriver
  5. Zero Hour
  6. Operation Zeus
  7. 147
I don't know too much about the band other than they appear to be from Victoria, Canada which seems to have a lot of these types of political crust bands.  For a demo, (or really for an album even) this is pretty solid (though only slightly blackened) crust.  Nothing revolutionary in style, but solid and enjoyable.  Reading the lyrics makes it pretty clear that they are opening opposed to National Socialism.  Available as a Pay-What-You-Want on their Bandcamp page.

Black Clothes - "Lygophilia" (2014)

BLACK CLOTHES "Lygophilia"

Year: 2014
Genre: Post-Black Metal
Country: Canada

Track List:
  1. The Great Leap
  2. Memories
  3. Ocean
bandcamp / facebook

One more demo from Canada, this time from Vancouver BC. There's very little information about the project, and the demo itself is quite short (about five and a half minutes). I'm not sure if it can be classified as "cascadian black metal" in terms of sound, although it definitely was influenced by atmospheric BM and post-rock.

Sinding - "Fog Reach" (2014)

SINDING "Fog Reach"

Year: 2014
Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal
Country: Canada

bandcamp

Release notes:

all instruments and vocals written and performed by e.v.
recorded, mixed and mastered by noah michael

aspect of wolf
aspect of bear
aspect of fawn

The demo was put out on July 7th, 2014, with the Sinding project being formalized in June 2014. Everything is written and performed by Ethan Vilu.

"I am a huge fan of the RABM movement, and absolutely consider Sinding to be an anarchist band. While the lyrics to the demo track are not explicitly anarchist in nature, the overall project is definitely an anarchist one, with ecological overtones and so on. Future Sinding material will continue in this vein, and I look forward to pursuing an anarchist/eco anarchist band to the fullest extent." - Ethan

While it's only an one-track debut demo, and the sound quality is a bit rough, I definitely enjoyed it. I was listening to it with a founding member of one of the projects which I posted here before (won't tell which one), and we both agreed that there's something to it that suggests a lot of potential. Looking forward for a full-length release.
