"This album has been a passion project of mine since I first started Dead Work back in 2012. In high school my teacher would hand out excerpts from A Peoples History by Howard Zinn to go along with our textbook readings. Viewing history from the viewpoint of the oppressed was both heartbreaking and infuriating, but also eye opening. Of all the injustices covered in that book, the one that struck hardest was the cold and calculated extermination of Indigenous populations. My father being Puerto Rican, I first started reading about the indigenous populations of the Caribbean that he would tell me about as I was growing up. It was astonishing that an entire culture could be blinked out of existence in a matter of 30 years. But the more I read, the more I realized that the Taino weren't alone. From the tip of Nunavut, Canada, down to Chile and Argentina's Tiera del Fuego, all experienced the same. And if not for my high school history teacher, who knows when I would have learned about it. American school painted a picture of a few small instances of injustice, but of an overall understanding between two people that one needed more space, and the other was obliging enough to quietly step out of the way.

I wasn't entirely sure how to even cover such a massive topic musically, and so I put the idea aside for several years and focused on other projects. Every time I sat down to start a new album, or write a new song, I always came back to the same topic, but decided it wasn't the time. Then, a few years ago, I made a move to a new state, and Dead Work effectively broke up, since I was losing my bandmates. In a new location, with no friends, I finally felt like I had a fresh musical canvas to make something that was more aligned with my recent musical tastes. So slowly but surely, I started crafting new songs that felt weighted enough to deal with the topic I wanted to write about. I decided each song would describe a different facet of colonization, that when combined, led to the destruction of thousands of cultures and millions of people between North and South America. There is no way to cover each of their stories and do them justice. Some have flourished in recent decades, some have been lost to time forever. Some can trace their heritage back 500 years or more, some will never know what culture they can claim as their own. I wrestled with each of these song topics, and finally narrowed it down to the 6 most destructive (in my opinion) aspects of the colonization of the Americas and the Caribbean. Disease, Religion, Removal from and Destruction of environment, Resistance and Language. These 6 topics, coupled with the opening track, that tells the creation story of the Taino people, who were the first to come in contact with Christopher Columbus, are what I now present to you as "The White Plague". Each track will have it's own description, so I would like to just finish this up by saying thank you for taking the time to listen. I know this album is filled with technical mistakes. I got in over my head when it came to playing the songs I wrote. But I would appreciate it if you look past the goofs and see the picture I tried to paint. I hope people see that I tried to tackle this subject with reverence for the lives lost, and those who continue to live under the weight of their ancestors. There is no righting so many wrongs, but acknowledgement is the first in a long line of steps to mend such old wounds. Thanks again.

I would also like to extend my warmest thanks and gratitude to Hagiophobic designs for working with me to create the sickest album artwork I've ever had!"

Bâtard EPs - Chaos (2011) Hibernation (2013) Pluies (2017)

Genre: D-beat dark madness
Country of origin: Canada
Year: 2011/ 2013/ 2017

Noisy d-beat black metal from Québec.
"Formed in 2009 in Montreal, Canada, Bâtard is a trio that makes a hybrid of black metal, punk and noisy industrial. Inspired by isolation, anger and hatred, Bâtard takes their rock and electronic roots to make an illegitimate sonic mix of guttural screams, cold guitars and noisy synth beats. Chaos & Hibernation (2014), a combination of the first two EPs, was released on CD by Russian independant label Kunsthauch. In 2018, american tape-only Witchcult records released the Pluies EP. Disgusted by the music business and rock'n'roll lifestyle, the three members are entirely dedicated in creating new music; therefore, Bâtard never tour. They are right now recording new tracks, particularly written in a hardcore punk vein. Bâtard embraced the impurity of its sound, celebrating disorder and imperfection."
"Hibernation" is totally pure grimy black metal, "Pluies", my favourite, is more lofi than the others.

enjoy

*special mention to "Nomade" from "Chaos": unique experience.

Regnvm Animale - "Brinna" / Norn - "Brenna" Split (2018)

Regnvm Animale - "Brinna" / Norn - "Brenna" Split

Year 2018

"This split release brings together Sweden's Regnvm Animale and Iceland's Norn for a joint release of furious blackend crust. 5 songs each of raw fury and disappointment with two distinct approaches to and takes on the extreme metal genre. About us, Regnum Animale is a Swedish extreme metal duo. Born in the soil of Swedish d-beat and crust. The songs circles around topics like freedom, and being trapped and unfree, alienation towards civilization and the state of human society today. The split is free to download from our bandcamp." Nidstang - "Retribution Will Come" (2017)

NIDSTANG "Retribution Will Come"

Year: 2017
Genre: Raw Black Metal / Crust
Country: USA

Track list:

  1. Bind
  2. Ergi
  3. Nidstang
  4. Without
  5. Infans Solaris
  6. Envenomation
  7. Alucinari
  8. Cloaked in Emerald
  9. Abstruse Existence
  10. Bound

The impressive debut of this solo project, created by one of the members of Huldrekall and influenced by the ideals of DIY punk, opens softly with "Bind", an ambient soundscape of synthesisers grinding through slow changes and gritty texture, before tearing into raw black metal aggression and hardcore riffing in "Ergi", and the shorter track "Nidstang". The album builds in speed, becoming a juggernaut fast, heavy, raw black metal, the kind of lo-fi staticky goodness any crust punk worth their patches will be left swooning over.

Vocally it's uncompromising stuff, with pure ferocity howling through the mix in a boiling overflow of ruthless aggression directed at a corrupt and complacent status quo. At times the pace varies from blistering aggression to slower and heavier, more reminiscent of particularly rough metallic hardcore than crust or black metal. This is particularly developed on the fourth track, "Without". These pace changes allow the album a kind of freshness to each track, rather than stagnating in an identical format; it hits hard and fast, and leaves you reeling.

The album closes with another ambient track, this one with a subtly different mood and feeling to "Bind", more sorrowful and final, and called "Bound", a simple and direct end to an interesting and well-developed album. Overall it's an extremely impressive first effort, and there are few similarities to the artist's main band, Huldrekall - Nidstang is most definitely its own project, not a pale copy. Can't wait to see where this debut leads.

A blackened crust compilation presented by the Scholomance Webzine. Features a lot of bands that I haven't heard of before, and most of which probably are apolitical, but there are some big RABM names as well. Supported by the members of Kerberos and Sordide. By the way, Sordide have released a new album not long ago, check it out too!

"The American motto is quite pushed around. From the In Crust We Trust created by the Obsence Extreme Fest, it mutated in In Grind We Crust ; since Crust also participated in the birth of Black Metal, we choose to present to you a compilation called In Black We Crust, which links Black Metal and its origins. The great Maxime Taccardi gracefully illustrated this compilation.

Don't only expect old-school Black Metal mixed with Crust. Crust gave birth to many other genres, and recently got more intellectual, in order to create a more and more powerful reflect of reality. Just like paintings of a chaotic world, those moments of primitive violence and melancholic reflections are here rendered in a mix of dirty Black Metal, and of Grind, Hardcore, Sludge, Doom, or even Drone and Post-Rock, a mix which always stays profoundly rooted in Crust sounds coming from all corners of the world"

Pretty good 7-track EP, even if I didn't like some of the vocal parts that much:
"Mustasuo was formed in Oulu, Finland in 2015 and plays a mixture of crust, grindcore, black metal and sludge. Our lyrics are not exclusively political, but some of them have strong leftist/antifascist overtones. Our first release "7" came out in September 2016 and in October we put out a split seven-inch vinyl with the grindcore band Napalm Ted. The name "Mustasuo" translates as "Black Swamp" and is the name of a district in Oulu"

This partnership exposes the story of post-civilization sins committed when desperation overwhelms. The whole split can be downloaded for free (or donate what you want!). Cara Neir truly push the envelope of music creativity. Completely unchained from the bondage of genre restrictions. Cara create atmosphere and darkness as often as aggression and hope. Wildspeaker provides a more straight forward pummeling blackened crust style. Plenty of true black metal riffs and d beats.

Timekiller are a rawpunk/hardcore band from Brazil. This is the short chat i've whit them.

"I lived in Rio de Janeiro for a few years where I started the band with Douglas (singer/songwriter) of deaf kids. We released our "bleed out" ep which was released on noise of hell records and was on cvlt nations top 6 raw punk records of 2014. Shortly after that a split with Timekiller and deaf kids was released. I am no longer in brazil but I am now in Vietnam and our "stagnant" ep is finally done mixed and mastered. I play all of the instruments on the records except for drums. The drummer on this record is chad lumsden from Collapsian. A kind of doom metal band from USA. While the band is no longer based out of brazil, we still maintain that the band is from brazil/USA because I often go back there and that is where much of the songwriting and recording happens. We are influenced by hardcore and Motörhead but still enjoy noisy atmospheric bands like swans. We try to incorporate that into our music as much as possible. A good mix of aggressive hardcore but also emotional and paranoid at times. We are looking for a label who will release this record in a physical format but until then we have it for download on our bandcamp"
