  8. Go beyond the sea and still bright light to the underwood (You overreach star!)
bandcamp / facebook

Mur, was created by Cameron Sather in Minnesota in 2013. The goal of this project, as he says, was to create a dichotomy between the airy, open heaviness of Avant-drone experimentalist, despondent folk, and the austere whirlwinds of atmospheric black metal.

This new album called Heartworn is a concept album based on the ancient ecological rhythms of North American animal migration and related themes. Recorded in the winter of 2015/2016 in an off-grid location in pastoral Minnesota powered with solar electricity and heated only with a wood stove. Mass waterfowl exoduses, desperate fish pawns, and the oldest, earthly symbols of snake life-cycles are among the focus of this work.

I, personally, liked it so much so I hope you like it too.

Shiv is a band from Slovenia that started in 2007. They recorded 2 demos and then slept up in 2008. In 2015 the band "resurrected". I found this on their Facebook: "It's been a while, but never say never. After years (7 actually) of pain correspondence, hurling insults, and ironic things out we agreed to give this beast new wings". Well, this is how this powerful EP is out; it it definitely brutal and really worth listening to it.

PS. I think I've posted enough releases for now, so I pass the initiative to the other contributors in this blog (especially the new ones). Hopefully they'll do a better job than me.

Grimmness & Kastchei - split (2016)

GRIMMNESS / KASTCHEI "split"

Year: 2016
Genre: Black Metal
Country: UK

Track List:
  1. Grimmness - Sun / Burnt Earth / Worthless
  2. Kastchei - Unholy Shitstorm In The Endless Spiralling Thread / Terraforming The Inner World / Orbiting / The Matter
bandcamp

Kastchei is a self-described "weird black metal" one-man project, which was previously featured on this blog among other artists in the "The Death Of A Modernist: Ritual vol.1" compilation. Here's a split EP with another UK-based one-man project, Grimmness. Both bands are left-wing and both of them are fed up of seeing people supporting bands who abuse their position to spout fascistic rhetoric. Grimmness' side takes a heavy blackened crust approach, and to be honest, I like it more than the Kastchei side (which has a more of a punky deathrock feel). The lyrics on the Grimmness' side aren't particularly political, while Kastchei's lyrics deal with "alienation and a lack of self-actualisation, drawing ideas from surrealism and existentialism/absurdism to explore the effects of capitalism on the mental states and social perceptions of human beings".

Domini Canes - "Green Lion" (2016)

DOMINI CANES "Green Lion"

Year: 2016
Genre: Blackened Punk, Black'n'Roll
Country: UK

Track List:
  1. Through The Wild Woods Of Saturn (Intro)
  2. Now You Have Fallen
  3. Green Lion
  4. Entombed In Forgotten Names
  5. The Pit And The Sky
  6. Fool, Repent
  7. Hope Reversed (Outro)
bandcamp

"Lunatic rock from the sun in the jaws of the green lion". The second demo from Domini Canes, an one-man project playing "intoxicated lunatic rock'n'roll from the lands of ancient Wessex". The vocals on this demo may be not for everyone's liking, but in general it's what I've expected from a "black'n'roll" album. The lyrical content on "Green Lion" is primarily based around alchemical symbolism and the human experience of society and self - even if the lyrics aren't as clearly political as on the first demo.

St. Bastard - "Daemon" (2015)

Genre: Doom/Sludge Metal
Country: USA

Track List:

  1. The Light Inverted
  2. Recipe For Disaster
  3. Rift
  4. Leaving It Worse Than You Found It
bandcamp

Seemingly apolitical one-man doom/sludge project of one of my readers in Brooklyn, NY. The author describes his intentions as "to make the heaviest music on earth but with hooks you can hum along to". Well, it's maybe not the heaviest music on Earth, but I liked it nevertheless.

Sarin Bath - s/t (2015)

SARIN BATH "Sarin Bath"

Year: 2015
Genre: Blackened Sludge Metal
Country: Canada

Track List:
  1. Burned & Rotting

  3. Slow Disease
  4. Depthless Grave
  5. Ground Bones
bandcamp

Raw, noisy sludge from my readers in Canada: "We play a stripped down noisy, primitive form of black sludge and I think it'd add nicely to blog and its fans. We'll be recording again soon. We don't play live much and when we do we generally cover ourselves in paint and make a mess. Instrumentation is a mix of bass, drums and home made pedals + vocals. Half written / half improvised".
Associated acts: IRN, ANGLES.

Bleak - s/t (2016)

BLEAK "Bleak"

Year: 2016
Genre: Doom/Sludge Metal
Country: USA

Track List:
  1. The Depravity of Man
  2. Hatred of the Natural
  3. On a Soil Falsified
  4. Pity / Thou Shalt
bandcamp

A new project of Nick Hertzberg (Almanac), with Antwonn (a member of the Philadephia hardcore band Basket) on vocals, released on Nick's label Deplorable Sounds

"This harsh, four (technically five) song debut offering from "Bleak" was actually supposed to be the FIRST recording released on Deplorable Sounds. In fact, this project, when it first started, was called "Deplorable" and then later changed to "Meat Week" and then "Bleak."

All of the songs were written on a no-name 1970s bass guitar that Nick purchased at a guitar shop in Glens Falls, NY in the early 2000s. The idea was to write simple chorded, blown out and layered bass songs while utilizing a mixture of Sunn Amps and direct-in signal chains. Drums, noise and vocal layers were then added over the course of four years.

Although much of the lyrical content here is improvised musings, courtesy of Basket's Antwonn, the instrumentals were written during a period where a great deal of Nietzsche was being read, digested and pondered upon...hence the titles. The ultimate fate of this project is unknown...as is the lives of all of it's participants and listeners..."

Ramaskri - s/t (2016)

[sömn] - "konflikt" (2016)

[sömn] "konflikt"

Year: 2016
Genre: Noise, Dark Ambient, Power Electronics
Country: Sweden

Track List:
  1. maktmakeri
  2. pengar=våld
  3. kartor
  4. produkt - människovärde
  5. för-/motakt
bandcamp

Minimalistic noise from Malmö, Sweden. The author is a reader of my blog, and the main reason he sent this release to me is his willingness to provide a radical alternative in a genre that's too infested with fascists. Of course, any feedback from the listeners would be appreciated.

"[sömn] is a one-person project based in Malmö. There has been three releases s to date, and the albums act more like collages of themes, with konflikt being the first political one, dealing primarily with class society and repression of progressive/revolutionary movements.

So far, the releases have been experimental in the sense that I have been toying around with samples, field recordings and images in freeware without knowing what I'm really doing. Usually, the tracks end up as some sort of dark ambient, industrial, noise, power electronics or some of their derivatives.

Although there are some tracks that I am happy with on my releases so far, I wouldn't consider my music "good". There is a fourth release in the making though, which I'm taking more seriously. Hopefully I will be able to produce a more coherent sound/atmosphere."

Downward Spiral - "The Things To Come" (2013)

  6. Το μισώ όταν ελπίζω (I hate hoping)
  7. Εξεγέρσεις (Uprisings)
bandcamp / facebook

Another band from Cyprus that's quite similar to En Psychro in terms of both sound and ideology:
"Downward Spiral were created at the start of 2012. They consist of ex-members of cypriot DIY bands Entos ton Teihon (Within the Walls) and Aposynthesis. We play crust punk music and continue to insist in the DIY philosophy and way of doing things"

En Psychro - "Faceless Mass" (2014)

  5. Μαρί (Mari)
  6. Fight to survive
  7. Νοοτροπία Κομματόσκυλου (Sheep mentality)
  8. Ορχηστρικό (Instrumental)
  9. Aπρόσωπη Μάζα (Faceless Mass)
  10. Σύγκρουση (Conflict)
  11. Iσόβια Καραντίνα (Quarantine for life)
  12. Μέγα πρόβλημα (Mega problem)
  13. M.Γ.Δ. (C.P.M.)
  14. Τάσεις Φυγής (Urge to run away)
bandcamp / facebook / youtube

"En Psychro (In Cold Blood) were formed in the summer of 2011 in Cyprus as a D-beat Hardcore Punk band". This is pretty regular crust/hardcore punk without much metal influence, but it was interesting to hear a band from Cyprus and compare it to the mighty Greek punk scene. It wasn't a disappointment for sure.

The Depressick - "Sub-Urban II" (2015)

THE DEPRESSICK "Sub-Urban II"

Year: 2015
Genre: Atmospheric, Depressive Black Metal
Country: México

Track List:
  1. Sub Urban...
  2. Nowhere
  3. Inferiority Complex
  4. Misdeeds
bandcamp / facebook

Sorrow, hate, urban life, melancholy... all of this involves the second demo of this Mexican band. (You can also listen and download for free their first demo here).
The band was formed on 2013 in Mexico city, having as an inspiration bands as Lifelover. According to them there are a lot of things that inspires the band, first of all the place they come from and the asphyxiating life in a city like that, also alcohol and the effects it causes on feelings, inner struggles... basically it's all about the personal members experiences living in an oppressive city and how they pass through the concrete jungle.

Right now the band is working on new material that will come out this year.

Red Winter - demo I (1999)

RED WINTER "demo I"

Year: 1999
Genre: Black Metal
Country: France

Track List:

  1. First Toil Then The Grave pt.1
  2. First Toil Then The Grave pt.2
  3. First Toil Then The Grave pt.3
  4. The Strike
  5. Tchabye
  6. Cut an' Paste
  7. Toward The Twilight (Night in Gales)
It's almost impossible to find any reliable info about this band, so they might very well be another joke band like the ones featured in my previous entry, but I found their music to be quite interesting. The only place on the net where you can find this demo is this blog, and while I can't say it's an NSBM blog, it's certainly not RABM-friendly. The thing is that its owner is very much against his own rips being re-posted by other sites, and I think I should honor that, despite all ideological disagreements. This demo is really rare and obscure stuff, after all. The band had released at least one other demo in 2000, so let's hope that someone would find and rip it too.

1st of April reviews: demos that are hard to take seriously

Out of many demos I've received over the last few months, there are some that are weird enough, or just hilariously bad, to be featured on here - on the April 1st, at least. Let's start from Gotha, a communist BM / harsh noise project with one and only demo:

"This is the sole release from Gotha. Nothing more will ever be released or produced. Gotha has no members, no identity, no talent. Songs are cut up and distorted samples and sparse moments in time held together by the proletarian revolutionary spirit"

Next is Forssa 1903, an self-described "social democratic black metal" band from Finland. This link was sent to me by several different people, and interestingly enough, the music doesn't sound as bad as I initially expected. Here are some links for those who can read Finnish, and their manifesto translated to English:

"SOCIAL DEMOCRACY... IS THE BASIC PRINCIPLE

Social democratic black metal (SDBM) may at first come off as a joke in the ears of weaklings and infidels. However, a closer insepction shows that the cultural and political background of a "black metal person" born after the World Wars to a Nordic environment downright requires for him to lean into ideological social democracy. Black metal, like any other subculture, is musically and ideologically split into several fractions. One of the few factors that unite the scene ideologically has commonly been anti-Christianity. The first wave mostly just flirted with Satanic imagery, but second wave Norwegians, who are also FORSSA 1903's closest influences, took opposing Christianity seriously. In this context it should be pointed out, however, that Satan also originates from Judeo-Christian bullshit, and Satan worshipping is thus nothing more than accepting the Judeo-Christian world view. FORSSA 1903 opposes Satan worshipping as forcefully as Christianity.

When opposing Christianity is accepted as an ideological basis, it's political roots can clearly be traced to social democracy. In Finland, SDP demanded removing religious education from schools and separation of church and state already in their 1903 party platform made in Forssa, which is the basis of our band's name. To some individuals in the black metal scene, national socialism and anti-Christianity match naturally. The fact is, however, that even in Finland social democracy stood against Christianity decades before those drunkards, cowards and "shit-pants" known as Nazis. Black metal doesn't settle for cheap copies, but instead goes all the way back to the roots.

It is true that even many social democrats declare themselves as Christians nowadays, which might feel like revisionism contrary to black metal at first glance. Dedication and loyalty are however another element in black metal that is important to me. No cultural and political movement wins by being mercurial and unsure, which is why I support Paavo Lipponen and Jutta Urpilainen [modern Finnish social democratic politicians] with the same fury and frenzy as the veterans of Forssa. Social democratic workers' movement, just like black metal, is an entity with various things of emphasis and waves. Its followers have to dig up the solid rock core, which you can lean to on hard times. Social democratic workers' movement, just like black metal, is based on opposing the Christian world view. This allows social democrats and black metallists, thinking and working in different ways, to find eachother. Therefore social democratic black metal, therefore social democratic workers' movement!"

And finally, a demo that I received not long ago from one of my readers in Edinburgh. He describes his tracks as "super short, super lazy and super fucking terrible", and I find it hard to disagree with. But who knows, maybe you'll hear something you like?
