bandcamp / facebook

Instrumental post-metal/progressive rock from my Lithuanian readers. Reminds me of their countrymen Autism; however, Spirale are way more experimental.

P.S. For those of you outside the ex-USSR: track #8 refers to a cult 1986 steampunk/black comedy movie: "Kin-dza-dza! represents a double entendre in terms parody and features dark and grotesque aspects of human diaspora which may be described as dystopian. It depicts a desert planet, depleted of its resources, home to an impoverished dog-eat-dog society with extreme inequality and oppression..." It's considered a brilliant example of political satire up to nowadays, and is frequently quoted.

Forest Whitaker is a one man blackened hardcore project from Texas in the United States.  He is a vegan anarchist and that message is clear in much of his music, especially the vegan part.  Track 4 is a sample heavy electronic track.  Track 6 sounds like dialogue pulled from a TV show (Dragon Ball Z I think).  The rest is pretty raw stuff, but if you're into that, you might like it.  I think track 5, 7, and 8 are good and worth listening to.  He has three other albums released on Torn Flesh records that you can check out and download free here if you like this one.

Banewreaker - "Banewreaker" (2013)

BANEWREAKER "Banewreaker"

Year:  2013
Genre:  Blackened Hardcore
Country:  USA

Track List:
  1. Masterful Wroth
  2. Treasonous
  3. Foment
  4. The Calm
  5. Shallow Roots
  6. Gaoler's Whip
  7. Bilenursed
  8. Banewreaker

Banewreaker is a blackened hardcore band from Eugene, Oregon featuring members of Arkhum, LORD, Grst, and Earthenwomb.  This is their first release.  Here is how they describe themselves:

"All band members are sympathetic to the Cascadian socio-political movement, especially that part of it that acknowledges the foundational importance of nature and which seeks to liberate it from the destruction imposed by inhuman corporate interests and political forces they manipulate.  Several band members are environmental activists, and are also developing Cascadian black metal projects.  While not expressly political, most of the ideas expressed in Banewreaker's lyrics describe the personal and inter-personal experiences that occur while living in various states of disappointment, destruction and confusion."

The music found here is angry and aggressive.  Depending on the song, and sometimes within songs, the band oscillates between a sound closer to hardcore (Masterful Wroth, for example) and a sound which shows more of their black metal influences (Foment, for example).  The music is a well crafted blend of styles and contains real passion.  This would be a good soundtrack for activism.  If you want to support them so they can keep making impressive music, head to their bandcamp page.

"Nuwisha's debut album is a musical journey through the full cycle of the seasons, with a heavy emphasis on the dreary bleakness of Winter"

As you may remember, Nuwisha is a new blackened folk project from Oregon, started in 2012 by one of my readers (Rowan WalkingWolf), and inspred by "profound experiences in and deep ecological connections with the Cascadian landbase and by dreams of the inevitable annihilation of civilization and the aftermath thereof". In comparison with the first demo, this full-length album has more black metal elements. Definitely recommended for those who's interested in eco-anarchist blackened neofolk in the vein of  Into The Rhine or Crooked Mouth (Nuwisha's music is somewhat more "unorthodox", though).

Binary Satan - "[☭]" (2013)

BINARY SATAN "[☭]"

Year: 2013
Genre: Harsh Noise, Power Electronics
Country: USA

Track List:
  1. From the Ruins of the Old Society We Rise Again
  2. ላእላይ መዋቅር
  3. Class War Never Ceases, Only Amplifies
  4. lux [11111011101]
  5. Raw Communist Noise
DOWNLOAD

Pure noise from Washington DC. The man behind Binary Satan is into black metal first and foremost, but recently he got interested in noise and martial industrial (mostly because of the projects featured on my blog!), as well as in Soviet music. He's not a communist in a strict sense of this word (Maoist or Leninist), rather an anarcho-communist or Luxemburgist, and this EP is nothing more than an experiment in mixing Soviet marches with harsh noise. Of course it isn't the easiest stuff to get into, but there are some who will like it.

Stay Here - "Non Mechanical/Hammer Hits My Skull" (2013)

Stay Here - Non-Mechanical/Hammer Hits My Skull 7"

Year: 2013
Genre: Atmospheric Doom/Sludge
Country: Canada

Track List:
  1. Non-Mechanical
  2. Hammer Hits My Skull

This is amazing atmospheric doom/sludge from the deep dark wilderness of Ottawa, Ontario.  Well it's not that deep and dark, but this music definitely makes it feel that way.  From the second I played "Non- Mechanical" I was blown away.  The drums that start it off make it feel like it's the start of an epic journey through someplace I can only call mythical.  This album is short,  but it truly makes up for that with beautifully put together songs with vocals that sound like distant screams from within that deep forest the album makes you feel like you are stranded in.  In short,  this album creates an awesome atmosphere and is extremely epic sounding.   Definitely check this band out by either clicking that download link up there or by checking out the Bandcamp!

P.S. It's also worth mentioning that all of the band members either identify as anarchist or autonomist, and their lyrics reflect their political values. -B.K.
